Tour | Greenwich Village Neighborhood Tour

Greenwich Village is among Manhattan's most desirable and expensive residential neighborhoods. It's history, however, betrays it's monied status. The Village, with it's quiet, shaded streets, lined with lovely brick and brownstone townhouses, was once the incubating ground of artistic, social and political movements that have helped shape US history. From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all.

Dance Performance | Dance Performance: The Set Up: I Nyoman Catra

Initiated in 2012, The Set Up is an eight-part series made by Wally Cardona and Jennifer Lacey with eight international artists viewed as masters in their respective disciplines. Each master is invited to teach what they think is most important about the form to which they have devoted their lives. This is followed by periods of response and reflection that culminate with a final piece. Displacing contemporary practice by “camping” within a tradition of mastery, the choreography happens in the layers of superficiality and depth inherent in assumption of the universality of dance.

Dance Performance | Dance: Maria Hassabi's Premiere

Premieres mark the transition artistic work undergoes, moving the work from a private to a public event. In its evolution from process into product, a premiere represents the first moment all the elements of live performance come together. Inevitably, this moment of breakthrough brings about strong feelings of anticipation as new elements are added: the audience, as viewer and critic. Premieres are widely considered special, and often, even more prestigious than succeeding performances, which is a paradox given that they are often imbued with fragility, even awkwardness. Ultimately, they celebrate the “finished” work of art, which consequently disregards process. Through Hassabi’s sculpturesque approach to movement and extended duration, PREMIERE continuously exposes process, calling attention to the present moment. Keeping the aliveness of the form at the forefront of each individual encounter, the work will reflect on the human experience as an ongoing process. Performers: Maria Hassabi, Hristoula Harakas, Paige Martin, Andros Zins-Browne, Robert Steijn. Sound Design: Alex Waterman. Visual Artist & Dramaturg: Scott Loyal
