Tour | Williamsburg Street Art Tour

Street art is visual art created in public locations, usually unsanctioned artwork executed outside of the context of traditional art venues. The term gained popularity during the graffiti art boom of the early 1980s and continues to be applied to subsequent incarnations. Stencil graffiti, wheat pasted poster art or sticker art, and street installation or sculpture are common forms of modern street art. Video projection, yarn bombing and Lock Onsculpture became popularized at the turn of the 21st century. The terms "urban art," "guerrilla art," "post-graffiti" and "neo-graffiti" are also sometimes used when referring to artwork created in these contexts.

Perched high atop the 41st floor overlooking Manhattan, a rooftop vegetable garden has been cultivated. Now growing for its third year, the organic garden illustrates a foray into urban agriculture, producing vegetables and herbs that are used throughout the hotel’s food and beverage program. The 1,344-square foot garden is situated 384 feet above Manhattan. With eleven planted beds and four robust barrels planted throughout summer and fall, vegetables include arugula, mesclun lettuces, heirloom tomatoes, yellow squash, zucchini, peppers and fall squashes. Herbs include basil, mint, thyme, oregano and cilantro. The garden utilizes only organic plants, soil, fertilizer and insect deterrents, including eco-friendly ladybugs. Led by Executive Chef and Chief Gardener Brian Wieler, the tours offer insider access to the private garden, which has breathtaking views of Manhattan and is closed to the public. During the tour, Chef Wieler discusses the hotel’s culinary and rooftop garden program, with a Q and A session and special surprises afterwards.

This exhibition brings together paintings, sculptures, and assemblages of approximately 25 artists that reconcile cataclysmic themes with a sense of irony or humor. Forgoing the traditional narrative, these artists use their own visual language to convey a universal uneasiness about the future. These works engage the viewer with a psychological disruption that ignites the emotional in lieu of the rational.

Concert | Indie Rock: Pree / Field Guides / Lindsey Mills

The songs on Pree's upcoming album Rima feature a series of interpersonal confrontations enhanced and at times distorted by the narrator's own fractured understanding of others. They are sent off in an outpouring of letters centered around longing and expectation, whose imposing jaws are often only capable of ensnaring disappointment and heartbreak. Field Guides began, as so many misguided things begin, in a bedroom. The bedroom belonged to a boy who wrote some songs about women and bedrooms and mental illness. And plants and animals. Field Guides features former or current members of Tarantula, Future Wife, Tigue, and others. There are more songs now about Amelia Earhart and books and buildings.

Concert | Caribbean Sounds: Krosfyah / Lead Pipe and Saddis / Something Positive

Barbados’ legendary KROSFYAH “plays speedy, exhilarating soca, calypso's uptempo party-music descendant,” (NY Times) with irresistible energy. Originally formed in 1989 by founding members Michael Agard, Tony Bailey, Felix Forde and the dynamic frontman Edwin Yearwood, the band started out playing the Caribbean hotel circuit but quickly outgrew that milieu. Krosfyah’s breakout hit came in 1995 with their appropriately named sophomore record Ultimate Party - Pump Me Up, and they have never looked back. Their arrival gets an extra punch from countrymen LEAD PIPE and SADDIS, whose smash hit “Ah Feeling” brought them to the finals of the International Groovy Soca Monarch Competition in Trinidad this year. The duo, also known as Porgie and Murda, cleaned up at the Barbados Music Awards as well, taking home Band/Group/Duo Of The Year, Songwriter Of The Year, Song Of The Year (“Ah Feeling”), Soca/Calypso Artist Of The Year, and the coveted Making It Against All Odds Award. The dynamic Brooklyn-based dance and music troupe SOMETHING POSITIVE, “known for its high-octane and synergetic performances,” (Caribbean Life) starts things off with a sunburst of sound and color. Founded by Cheryl Byron, this ensemble of dancers, singers, and musicians dedicated to the art and culture of the African Diaspora and its cross-cultural influences has been performing for over three decades.
