Harlem has been the heart of several music revolutions. From jazz to blues to Broadway, Harlem has seen some of the most prolific artists of the 20th Century.
Join this two-hour tour of South Harlem and learn about its musical history. They’ll talk about black spirituals, jazz music, R+B, Yiddish singers, Tin Pan Alley writers, minstrel shows, contemporary gospel music, and more. They’ll also discuss how music influences religion and vice versa while visiting the outside of several Harlem churches and mosques.
They’ll end the tour around 6:45 pm outside a gospel church. From there, you can enjoy an intimate gospel service featuring a 10-piece band and solo singers—or hop on the nearby subway to your next destination. Following the musical performance, you’ll experience a gospel sermon. The sermon and musical portion take place in an actual Harlem church, so you’ll never experience the same service twice.
