Opening Reception | Contemporary Meets Colonial: 2 New Exhibitions

"A Modernist in the Colony," installed throughout the historic landmark in upper Manhattan, features 30 artworks in glass and ceramic by Michigan-based artist Jeff Blandford. The new works are placed alongside approximately 18 decorative objects from the storied mansion's collection to create a compelling dialogue. Inspired by the newly reinterpreted period rooms within the 250-year-old site, Blandford created everyday objects - drinking glasses, bowls, and candlesticks - with a modern twist. Presented together, the historic and the contemporary exchange is activated in surprising ways. Local artists Patrick Perry, Sarah Rowe, and Rachel Sydlowski respond to the unique history, archives, and architecture of the mansion in the concurrent exhibition "Infinite Archive." Each artist employs archival objects as springboards to create site-specific installations comprising ceramic objects, jewelry, and prints. They present visual interpretations based on different avenues of research conducted by each artist, notably into the life and times of the formidable Eliza Jumel whose tastes in fashion, furnishings, and décor are still very much in evidence at the mansion.

This extraordinary exhibition highlights recent sculptures, paintings, and installations by the maverick Czech-born New York artist Pavel Kraus. At the core of the show are new works centered on the artist’s recurring theme of “futuristic archeology.” In his vessel-like sculptures, made of lead, marble and resin; marble floor pieces; and encaustic paintings often inlaid with jewel-like bits of resin, Kraus melds the past, present and future.

Opening Reception | Peter Roux's Suspension and Segment: Paintings

Roux utilizes somewhat 'epic' subjects--cloud formations, large billows of smoke--as pulls into illusory space and then sets them into dialogue with elements of gestural marks and flat space (often at the edges of the pictorial window). Sharp fields of blacked-out blocking, pushing into areas of deeper representational space further define what is available to the viewer and how it is all ultimately judged by the eye. In these offsets Roux finds tensions and relationships that reflect on how contemporary spatial language and image can be understood. This is Peter Roux' first solo exhibition at the gallery. He has exhibited throughout the United States from Ogunquit, ME, Boston, MA, Martha's Vineyard, MA, Providence, RI, Charlotte, NC, Atlanta, GA to Seattle, WA, Palo Alto, CA and Sun Valley, ID. His paintings are found in select corporate collections such as Fidelity Investments, Ritz-Carlton Hotels, Four Seasons Hotels, Marriott Hotels, Westin "W" Hotels, Meditech Corporation and Greenfield and Lynch as well as in the collection of the DeCordova Museum in Lincoln, MA. Peter Roux lives and work in North Carolina.

Author Reading | Elizabeth Currid-Halkett reads from her book The Sum of Small Things: A Theory of the Aspirational Class

Today’s elites are defined by cultural capital rather than income bracket. They earnestly buy organic, carry NPR tote bags, and breast-feed their babies. They care about discreet, inconspicuous consumption—like eating free-range chicken and heirloom tomatoes, wearing organic cotton shirts and TOMS shoes, and listening to the Serial podcast. They use their purchasing power to hire nannies and housekeepers, to cultivate their children’s growth, and to practice yoga and Pilates. Elizabeth Currid-Halkett dubs this segment of society “the aspirational class” and discusses how, through deft decisions about education, health, parenting, and retirement, the aspirational class reproduces wealth and upward mobility, deepening the ever-wider class divide. With a rich narrative and extensive interviews and research,The Sum of Small Things illustrates how cultural capital leads to lifestyle shifts and what this forecasts, not just for the aspirational class but for everyone.

Discovered in France only just a year ago, Fishbach’s voice is one of surprise and sensuality, which instantly sets itself apart from the norm. Fishbach is from Charleville-Mézières (a small town in the east of France) and her voice goes from a soft and almost gentle whisper to a rugged and loud chant, deep and incantatory. Onstage, she adopts a charismatic and androgyne figure, a pop character between Kate Bush and Ian Curtis.
