Tour | Tour of Gracie Mansion, Home of New York's Mayors

In 1799, a prosperous New York merchant named Archibald Gracie built a country house overlooking a bend in the East River, five miles north of the then-New York City limits. Little did he know that, more than 200 years later, his home would be serving as the official residence of the First Family of New York City - a place where history is made, not merely recorded. As a historic house museum run by the Parks Department, sitting on 11 acres of grounds now known as Carl Schurz Park, Gracie Mansion has served as the home of 10 mayors, beginning first with Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia in 1942. Today, Gracie Mansion is occupied by the de Blasio family, which has opened its doors in the spirit of the administration's motto: one city, rising together. In keeping with that theme, Mayor de Blasio and First Lady Chirlane McCray have introduced a new art installation, titled “Windows on the City: Looking Out at Gracie’s New York.” Tours take place every Tuesday at 10am, 11am, 2pm, and 3pm until Dec. 12, 2017.

Workshop | Impact! How to Improve Your Photography Instantly

The camera’s viewfinder is a black canvas and it’s up to you to fill it with visually appealing imagery. Having a good understanding of how to arrange the elements in your viewfinder is the challenge. In this class, Eric Stoner from Canon U.S.A. will share a plethora of images with you so you can visually see what goes into making a great image. He’ll also show you some images that need some help and how to address the issues. Of course every image is as different as each person viewing it so artistic interpretation play a big role in creating great photographs. The key is to learn the rules and then forget them and if you’re going to break a rule, know why you’re doing it. Feel free to bring a few jpeg images on a USB thumb drive and if there’s time at the end, Stoner will critique them on screen so everyone can share in the learning process.

A fabulous list of producers and onscreen personalities, as well as The Lavender Light Gospel Choir, will talk about the series. The first and longest running series on American television devoted to LGBT topics, In the Life served for more than 20 years as a primary news and information source for social, political, and legal issues facing the LGBT community at a time before the mainstream media would do so. The show openly celebrated culture and profiled political and religious leaders, activists, advocates, artists, writers, performers, and athletes who were making a difference in the lives of LGBT people.
