Fast forward several years and her sultry vocals and seductive disco-funk sounds have fully matured, as evidenced by her fifth album, 2015’s Vivian. Gallery Talk | Charting the Divine Plan: The Art of Orra White Hitchcock (1796–1863): Exhibition Tour

The exhibition explores the confluence of art, love, science, and religion in the extraordinary art of Orra White Hitchcock, one of America’s first female scientific illustrators. Her marriage in 1821 to Amherst College professor Edward Hitchcock cemented a years-long friendship and collaboration based on a bedrock of faith and science, mutual respect, close observation, and mental capacity for the largest of ideas. Orra White exhibited a prodigious scientific mind and abundant artistic talent at an early age. The exhibition traces her development from schoolgirl projects to highly accomplished renderings of the natural scenery of the Connecticut River Valley used in her husband’s many geology publications. Less well known are colorful paintings on cotton—some more than twelve feet long—that were used to illustrate her husband’s many college lectures on geology, botany, zoology, and anatomy. In these, Orra White Hitchcock communicated complex scientific principles in abstract visual terms that now appear gorgeously fresh and modern.

Classical Music | Early Music Works for Vocal Quartet: pieces by Monterverdi and Galileo Galilei's father

Vox Aquarum performs works by father of the famous astronomer Galileo Galilei, Vincenzo Galilei and Monteverdi. Vincenzo Galile was a noted lutenist and composer in the later 16C. A member of the Florentine Camerata, Galilei’s works often anticipate Monteverdi’s seconda pratica, as evidenced by the solo bass monodies “Si gioioso mi fanno” and “Se ben di sette stelle.” Claudio Monteverdi is a composer of both secular and sacred music, and a pioneer in the development of opera, he is considered a crucial transitional figure between the Renaissance and the Baroque periods of music history. Vox Aquarum is a vocal quartet. It's members share equally a dedication toward expanding appreciation for vocal chamber music. They are: Katrina Montagna, soprano; Chelsea Laggan, alto; Matthew Koraus, tenor and continuo organ; Brian Goff, bass; Christopher Morrongiello, lute and chitarrone.

When I Was Puerto Rican is a 1993 autobiography by Puerto Rican native Esmeralda Santiago. It is the first of three installments, followed by Almost a Woman and The Turkish Lover. Esmeralda Santiago's writing career evolved from her work as a writer of documentary and educational films. Her essays and opinion pieces have appeared in national newspapers including the New York Times and the Boston Globe, and on mass market magazines like House & Garden, Metropolitan Home, and Good Housekeeping. Opening Reception | Spirited Densities: Our Compressed Life

A group exhibition exploring density and layeredness through a perspective of compression (as opposed to expansion). As images and information in our media-infused lives have increased in speed and volume, an expanding experience of simultaneity has seemed to follow, with events, news, and history co-existing in the crowded moment. The works of Ryan McLaughlin, Zach Nader, Ferdinand Penker, and Emma Webster reflect this compressed quality of information, whether through reference, layering, and exposure, as in Nader’s, McLaughlin’s, and Webster’s work in painting and video or through the almost reference-less, self-reflexive, and precise works on paper of Penker, his marks altogether suggestive of much time spent at work. Structured and suffused as they may be, there is a balance, a sense of entrance, and a quality of pleasure to all of these works; they project their density as uniquely spirited
