Gallery Talk | Made in New York City: The Business of Folk Art: Exhibition Tour

Folk art has flourished in the heart of New York City since the eighteenth century, contrary to popular belief that it was a rural genre that reflected local tastes, traditions, and needs. Around 100 works of art by self-taught artists tell the story about New York City as the center of America’s financial and commercial world from two perspectives simultaneously: “The Art of Business” portrays the people and places that were part of the city’s thrumming commercial life, and “The Business of Art” highlights the diverse mediums and formats used by the artists, artisans, and manufacturers. This tour of the exhibition is conducted by museum gallery guides.

Opening Reception | Healing Thru Art: A Supernatural Ceremony

You may recognize Billy Waldman from Harmonie Korines coming-of-age film Kids. You may also recognize him from Spike Jonze's film Rubbish Heap. Waldman grew up in the downtown skate scene. As an adult he moved to Brazil and opened an art gallery with his wife Juliana called East Side Galeria de Arte Comtemporanea, in Sao Paulo. There, they brought New York street art to the streets of Brazil. They moved back to New York several years ago with their children, and now their goal is to bring Brazilian Naif Folk Art to the streets here. The artists involved with the show wanted to present their work in an environment such as “the artist outpost” because rather than use art to promote an activist cause happening in the world today, they wanted to simply use their art as a way to heal. Therefore, this show represents all the issues that need attention in today’s world, ranging from global warming, gender inequality, the destruction of our planet and equality for all. The way to be heard and to heal is through art.
