Central Park, always a great park for foraging, is spectacular in late spring. Wild herbs and vegetables thrive throughout the park. You'll be looking for poor man's pepper, sheep sorrel, wood sorrel, lamb's-quarters, wild ginger, greenbrier, lady's thumb, purslane, and Asiatic dayflower, but most spectacular will be the cattails. Epazote is one of the park's best culinary herbs. A mainstay in Mexican cuisine, it's great in guacamole, salsa, and bean dishes. Daylily flowers, sold as "golden needles" in Chinatown, live for only 1 day each and have a sweet-pungent flavor. They're excellent in soups and salads, and you can even stuff them. Use the flowers in salads, tempura, and soups. Prepare the buds like string beans. If it has rained beforehand, you may also find gigantic chicken mushrooms, brittle russulas, and prized bolete mushrooms. The tour will last for about 4 hours. Please wear a mask and observe social distancing.
