Play | A Picture of Autumn: Comedy, "the echoes of Chekhov are unmistakable" (virtual, streaming for 24 hours)

A Picture of Autumn made its debut on February 11, 1951 in a one-night 'try-out' performance presented by the Repertory Players, at the Duke of York's Theatre on London's West End. Despite promising reviews, the play was never picked up. Instead, N.C. Hunter enjoyed great success with his plays Waters of the Moon, A Day by the Sea and A Touch of the Sun, which dominated the West End throughout the fifties. Meanwhile, A Picture of Autumn gathered dust until this acclaimed production--the play's first in over 60 years. The streaming will be available until Jun 13th. By N.C. Hunter Directed by Gus Kaikkonen

Park Walk | (IN-PERSON) Foraging Tour in Central Park: Wild Herbs and Vegetables, Mushrooms, Daylily Flowers and More

Central Park, always a great park for foraging, is spectacular in late spring. Wild herbs and vegetables thrive throughout the park. You'll be looking for poor man's pepper, sheep sorrel, wood sorrel, lamb's-quarters, wild ginger, greenbrier, lady's thumb, purslane, and Asiatic dayflower, but most spectacular will be the cattails. Epazote is one of the park's best culinary herbs. A mainstay in Mexican cuisine, it's great in guacamole, salsa, and bean dishes. Daylily flowers, sold as "golden needles" in Chinatown, live for only 1 day each and have a sweet-pungent flavor. They're excellent in soups and salads, and you can even stuff them. Use the flowers in salads, tempura, and soups. Prepare the buds like string beans. If it has rained beforehand, you may also find gigantic chicken mushrooms, brittle russulas, and prized bolete mushrooms. The tour will last for about 4 hours. Please wear a mask and observe social distancing.

Opening Reception | (IN-PERSON, indoors) New York PARADISE LOST Bushwick Era Disco: NYC in the 70s

Meryl Meisler's series is an intimate journey through the pandemonium and ecstasy of New York City from the 1970s to the early 1990s. Meisler documents a tumultuous time in the city's history marred by epidemics of crime, addiction, and AIDS, intensified by a paralyzing blackout and political and fiscal crises. Frequenting Manhattan's legendary discos that arose from the disorder, she captured hedonistic havens patronized by celebrities and revelers of the night. In contrast, daylight revealed the beauty of those who loved and thrived in burnt-out Bushwick, where Meisler worked as a public school art teacher and continuously documented her surroundings.

Performance | Global Forms Theater Festival: Gera sa Droga (War on Drugs) (virtual)

Gera sa Droga (War on Drugs) is a self-devised piece created by Filipina writer and performer Dorothea Gloria. Having been raised in a family filled with journalists, Gloria aims to translate news articles into stage performances. Gera sa Droga (War on Drugs) focuses on the current administration of President Duterte and his response to drug use in the Philippines. Gloria wants to highlight the different Filipino voices, from the victims of the drug massacre, to the family members left behind, to close friends and relatives, to the police that implement rules, to the journalists that cover the killings, to the president himself. This piece questions if peace and order can truly be attained through violence and killing.

Jazz | Claudia Acuña and Jon Cowherd: Jazz in Performance (virtual)

More than a long-awaited new album, Claudia Acuña’s Turning Pages is an exquisite reintroduction to a singer who has thrived at the cusp of jazz and Latin American music. The project captures an artist in the process of reinventing herself, with a program of strikingly melodic original songs expressing her singular vision. Featuring a stellar cast of collaborators, Acuña’s first new recording in a decade makes a compelling case that while keeping a lower profile she’s been pluming new emotional depths. Although Mercy is Jon Cowherd's first album under his own name, the esteemed pianist/composer/arranger/producer is already firmly established as one of the jazz world's most accomplished, expressive and in-demand young musicians.
