City Walk | Queer History Walk

A walking tour that explores the queer histories of the neighborhood surrounding the museum. This walk will bring visitors to select sites to reflect on the changing nature of queer community as it formed along the New York waterfront. Visit the former sites of bars, clubs, and public spaces and consider the intersection between artistic and sexual experimentation that occurred alongside the piers of the West Side. The walk will culminate with a look at Day's End (2021) by David Hammons, a new permanent public artwork that sketches the shape of the former Pier 52 building and references a work by the artist Gordon Matta-Clark from 1975. The layered history of Hammons's work serves as a model for how the queer history of the city remains a defining presence in the ever-changing landscape of the neighborhood. Concert | Audio Experience of Electronic Music: Over 100 Speakers

Over one hundred audio speakers will bathe the audience in sound, an audio experience they could not possibly replicate at home. A guided tour of contemporary electronic music runs from music composed for a single moving speaker to a work that exploits the full 102-speaker Meyer Sound Constellation, using dozens of speakers mounted all around the audience in the four walls and the ceiling of the concert space. The program crafted by composer Greg Wilder includes seminal selections from Frank Zappa, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Jean-Phillippe Rameau, Wolfgang Miterer; music that's rarely been heard in the way the composers intended. Commentary throughout the program will illuminate the dramatic shift in the way people will be creating and experiencing music for decades to come. Must be fully vaccinated with a valid photo ID. Must wear N95, KF94, or KN95 high-grade mask while at the venue.

Play | Lear, Part I: Outdoor Shakespeare Adapted to the Old West

California, 1879. The Frontier lies open with the promise of power, wealth, and glory... for some. For others there is only defeat and ruin. Written in the midst of a deadly plague, Lear is a tragedy about family, loyalty, and the choices people make to break free from their restraints. No ghosts, no angry gods, no magic, and no witches. Only the unforgiving skies, the cruelty of the ordinary world, and the human heart's capacity for love and hate, darkness and light. Presented in two parts.

Performance | Rivers of Renewal: Performance Art

Phingbodhipakkiya's Rivers of Renewal offers the opportunity to shed anguish and start over, letting go of whatever might weigh us down. Each April, Thai people celebrate the start of a new year during the Songkran festival, where everyone from children to elders takes part in throwing water at one another. The spirit of Songkran lives in this piece as visitors are invited to find release by throwing water at a cylindrical tapestry of mixed media and pigment. With every splash, the pigments run together creating rivulets and textures dripping from the tapestry onto the ground, creating a grand, layered commemoration of community catharsis. With this piece, the artist creates a monument to restoration and renewal, celebrating the transformation that we've witnessed and the peace that follows.

Opera | Handel's Masterpiece Orlando: Hero of Love in a Garden

Hans Tashjian, Bass; Jeffrey Mandelbaum, Countertenor; Elyse Anne Kakacek, Lyric Soprano; Heather Hill, Soprano; Hai-Ting Chinn, Mezzo Soprano; Rebecca Pechefsky, Harpsichordist, Baroque String Quartet (Rebecca Nelson, Rafa Prendergast, Jessica Park & Cullen O'Neil) Orlando, a knight from the Crusades, is originally the central character of an epic poem by Ludovico Ariosto. The story dramatizes his struggle between love and military glory. However, this production updates this conflict to reflect contemporary sensibilities, centering the questions of what it means to love truly, and how to endure pain and loss. George Frideric Handel brought baroque opera to its apogee, as his compositional brilliance amplified music's distinct power to communicate drama. Opera began as an experiment to demonstrate music's ability to reveal and manipulate the emotions behind a text, as opposed to solely mimicking the words. Baroque music relies heavily on a technique of bittersweet dissonance resolving into consoling consonance, which impacts a listener viscerally. The term "baroque" connotes this kind of lavish intensity, which captivates audiences' passions, bringing them personally into the experience.
