Museums | Historic 1885 Ship, Indoor Galleries and Outdoor Exhibition

Located in the heart of the historic Manhattan district, the museum preserves and interprets the history of New York as a great port city. Founded in 1967, it includes an extensive collection of works of art and artifacts, a maritime reference library, galleries, working 19th-century print shop, and a fleet of historic vessels that all work to tell the story of "Where New York Begins." Wavertree is a historic iron-hulled sailing ship built in 1885, now the largest wrought iron sailing vessel afloat. Guests will visit the open-air portions of the ship. Access to the main deck and quarter deck. Learn how people worked and lived aboard a 19th century cargo sailing vessel, from the captain to the ship's officers, cooks, and crew. Then visit the cargo hold and stand atop the viewing platform and enjoy the view as you look out across New York Harbor and the Brooklyn Bridge. In addition, view an outdoor exhibition on the Pier. Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 11am to 5pm.

Performance | Rivers of Renewal: Performance Art

Phingbodhipakkiya's Rivers of Renewal offers the opportunity to shed anguish and start over, letting go of whatever might weigh us down. Each April, Thai people celebrate the start of a new year during the Songkran festival, where everyone from children to elders takes part in throwing water at one another. The spirit of Songkran lives in this piece as visitors are invited to find release by throwing water at a cylindrical tapestry of mixed media and pigment. With every splash, the pigments run together creating rivulets and textures dripping from the tapestry onto the ground, creating a grand, layered commemoration of community catharsis. With this piece, the artist creates a monument to restoration and renewal, celebrating the transformation that we've witnessed and the peace that follows.

Discussion | Intersections of Identity: The Jewish Indigenous Experience (online)

To be both Indigenous and Jewish can be enriching and confusing. Those who are members of both of these communities may struggle to feel like they belong in either place. However, as many Indigenous Jews have pointed out, there is much that is similar between the two communities, including struggles for acceptance, histories of oppression, and rich cultural traditions. Join the Museum and the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian for a conversation about the Indigenous Jewish experience. The program will feature a conversation between Sarah Podemski, star of FX's Reservoir Dogs, and Emily Bowen Cohen, artist and comic writer. The program will be moderated by Cindy Benitez, Program Manager at the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian.

City Walk | Queer History Walk

A walking tour that explores the queer histories of the neighborhood surrounding the museum. This walk will bring visitors to select sites to reflect on the changing nature of queer community as it formed along the New York waterfront. Visit the former sites of bars, clubs, and public spaces and consider the intersection between artistic and sexual experimentation that occurred alongside the piers of the West Side. The walk will culminate with a look at Day's End (2021) by David Hammons, a new permanent public artwork that sketches the shape of the former Pier 52 building and references a work by the artist Gordon Matta-Clark from 1975. The layered history of Hammons's work serves as a model for how the queer history of the city remains a defining presence in the ever-changing landscape of the neighborhood.

Parade | Murmurations Puppet Parade

Murmurations is a collective puppetry performance in public space where humans of all ages are invited to shed their human bodies and become a murmuration of menhaden. Puppetry, song and movement transform the space into a seascape of androgenous oysters, stunning sturgeon and captivating cetaceans. The puppets and costumes of this performance are crafted entirely of recycled materials, including waste materials removed from New York City waterways. The practice that informs Murmurations is rooted in Bread and Puppet pageantry, carnival, circus parade, and direct action where large performing objects activate public spaces with collective action. The performance is composed of two movements. The first movement will occur in the grass lawn. Here, participants will learn the movement vocabulary of a fish murmuration. They will be taught the songs of the shoal, and be adorned in costumes and puppet headpieces. The second movement will begin as the murmuration parades to the park. As the group sings and mumurates through the large green space of the park, giant puppets inspired by astounding biodiversity of New York Harbor will appear in various distant locations of the park. Operated by small teams of puppeteers and instrumentalists, these puppets of oysters, sturgeons, and humpback whales will parade to the murmuration creating a cacophonous confluence of city and sea. And just as this symphony appears to reach a peak, the murmuration will dissipate, fading into the landscape, to Teardrop Park and our human lives. Those who wish to participate are invited to gather at 2pm. Please note that participants will move together in a close group. All are welcome to enjoy the parade at 3pm.

Gallery Talk | Dress Rehearsal for a Dream Sequence: Exhibition Tour

An imaginative walkthrough of the exhibition, led by Heather Lynn Johnson, that avoids conventional methods of analysis and instead is based on free-floating associations, sparks of intuition, and poetic resonances. Johnson, herself an artist, poet and researcher, draws from her experience at various museum archives to attune it with the queer structures of support proposed by Anna Campbell. In response to the highly evocative sculptures by Campbell and following the histories signaled by the works’ rich references, Johnson envisions spaces of queer support and preservation beyond the normative institutional mechanisms of inclusion and exclusion.
