Book Discussion | Empires of Ideas: Creating the Modern University from Germany to America to China (online)

The modern university was born in Germany. In the twentieth century, the United States leapfrogged Germany to become the global leader in higher education. Will China challenge its position in the twenty-first? Today American institutions dominate nearly every major ranking of global universities. Yet in historical terms, America's preeminence is relatively new, and there is no reason to assume that US schools will continue to lead the world a century from now. Indeed, America's supremacy in higher education is under great stress, particularly at its public universities. At the same time Chinese universities are on the ascent. Thirty years ago, Chinese institutions were reopening after the catastrophe of the Cultural Revolution; today they are some of the most innovative educational centers in the world. Will China threaten American primacy? With author William C. Kirby.

Dancing | A Tribute to Paradise Garage: Dancing

From 1977 to 1987, the Soho nightclub Paradise Garage was the center of the international dance world and a key nexus point of New York LGBTQIA+ culture. Much of The Garage's notoriety and fame can be attributed to its longtime resident DJ, the master remixer Larry Levan, who was notorious for his all-night, experiential, and musically diverse explorations into sound. Levan was among the first club DJs to elevate his work into the realm of undeniable art, a tradition continued by his devotee, DJ Victor Rosado. Rosado's blissful dancefloor vibes, genre-blind selections and obvious passion for the music will all be fully on display at this loving tribute to the Garage and to the memory of Levan on the year of the thirtieth anniversary of his passing.

Concert | 3 Indie Rock Bands

Identical twin sisters Katie and Allison Crutchfield haven’t always played music together—like their early project PS Eliot—but when they do, it’s easy to see the talent and passion they share. This year these former Brooklyn residents will return to New York City to reshare the stage: Waxahatchee -Katie’s band. Anywhere alumn -which has evolved from a solo acoustic act into the lush country-tinged rock arrangements of her latest album Saint Cloud; and Swearin’, Allison’s band with Kyle Gilbride, Amanda Bartley and Jeff Bolt, whose self-titled 2012 debut remains a Philly indie rock classic. They’re joined by Chicago duo Ohmme, touring in support of their 2020 LP Fantasize Your Ghost.

Opening Reception | Ji Zhou: Symbiosis

The artist, based on his observation and reflection on the current situation of the contemporary environment, focuses on plants in the works in this exhibition. Every piece was shot and laid out on a specially designed structure, the light from which allows the artist to isolate and inspect each plant, with an emphasis on its pattern. The contrast between the natural plants and the appearance of artificial photography suggests a symbiotic relationship between what is ordinarily provided, and what is altered by humans.
