Play | The Lady of the Camellias: Tragic Love Story of a Courtesan and a Young Bourgeois

A new adaptation of Alexandre Dumas's story combines dialogue from Dumas’ novel (considerably different from Dumas’s stage play) with text and structural concepts from the libretto of the opera “La Traviata.” The fully-realized production is performed inside the open-air walls of the venue. Set in mid-19th century France, a courtesan suffering from consumption named Marguerite (and nicknamed “The Lady of the Camellias" because she wears a red camellia when she is indisposed, and a white camellia when she is available to her lovers), and Armand, a young bourgeois, fall in love. After Armand convinces her to leave her courtesan life to live with him in the countryside, their plan is interrupted by Armand's father Georges Duval who is concerned with the scandal created by the illicit relationship that will destroy his son’s future. Marguerite agrees to sacrifice herself for Armand’s family and leaves him. When Armand shows up at her deathbed thinking she left him for another man, he pledges to love her even after her death.

Dance Performance | To a Garden Luxuriously Verdant (Enameled with Countless Flowerings): A Juneteenth Celebration with Poetry, Dance and Music

A site-specific evening-long multicultural performance commemorating Juneteenth. Curated, conceptualized, and executed by the singular creative force that is Carl Hancock Rux, To a Garden Luxuriously Verdant (Enameled with Countless Flowerings) is a multi-genre, experiential celebration of the fight for a more free America on the eve of the 158th anniversary of Juneteenth Independence Day. This year's work, inspired by the eponymous verse by Portuguese poet Luis Vaz de Camoes and Harriet Tubman's self-described recurring dream, embraces the transformative intensity and power of both color and nature. Rux's performance, featuring guest appearances by Alicia Hall Moran, Aaron Diehl, Martha Redbone, Morley and Chris Bruce, and Burnt Sugar The Arkestra Chamber with special guests Vernon Reid & DJ Logic, will be presented amidst awnings of flowers across the space and a wave of petals atop the Hearst Plaza pool; and the audience will witness modern dance by Ronald K. Brown's EVIDENCE. The concert will blend traditional spiritual songs, European opera, and Scottish folk songs in an exploration of salvation through floral rapture. Costumes, visual art and production design for this event are courtesy of the acclaimed installation artist Dianne Smith, with hair and makeup by Bernard Giles. Followed by a silent disco at 9:30pm.
