Workshop | Cultivating Emotional Balance: Introductory Session (online)

Cultivating Emotional Balance is a comprehensive training method centered around the exploration of our emotional landscape and using its energy to support greater wellbeing--essentially, a greater sense of happiness, meaning and joy in the midst of our turbulent times. Developed by Dr. Alan Wallace, Dr. Paul Ekman and Dr. Eve Ekman at the request of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, CEB is a secular approach that combines the scientific understanding of emotions as an evolutionary mechanism with the profound contemplative methods for developing concentration, kindness and insight. CEB as a program offers its participants some of the key psychological and contemplative skills that provide for a greater sense of meaning, increased control over emotional states, better communication and a greater commitment to prosocial action. The essence of the program is cultivation of inner balance--a genuine inner equilibrium that allows for true psychological flourishing. This info session will focus on establishing a basic understanding of the role emotions play in our wellbeing, and the way we can deal with them by means of observation, suppression and reappraisal.

Opening Reception | Patrice Aphrodite Helmar, Polaris

The exhibition brackets a fragment of this larger series of portraits and landscapes with a focus on a two-year span of time between 2020 and 2023 during which Helmar assigned themself the project of self-portraiture, uncommon for the artist, during a time of isolation and extended periods of darkness. In these photographs, Helmar places themself, often accompanied by their dog, Dolly Girl, into scenarios, unbidden, within otherwise vacant landscapes. The majority of these photographs were made with the “unapologetically photographic” Graflex, a view camera from the 1950s, and utilize medium- and large-format film, interchangeable formats with the same aspect ratio (6x7 and 4x5). The large-scale black-and-white gelatin silver prints utilize the formal restraints of photography, its ‘event-ness,’ to depict solitary encounters and landscapes.

Dancing | Silent Disco

The innovative Haitian DJ, music producer, and singer Gardy Girault pumps rara rhythms and electronic music. Girault built his reputation in the mid-2010s with a distinctive merging of rara rhythms and house music that he referred to as "rara tech." By the decade's end, he had created his own label and found international success, releasing numerous EPs and playing his custom blend everywhere from North America to Africa and the Middle East. Girault began his career in Port-au-Prince in 2008, though it was after the 2010 earthquake that he began to form his original style combining traditional Haitian forms like rara, konpa, and rasin with progressive and deep house beats. This sound could be heard on the 2012 EP Reminiscence Then and even more so on his 2015 debut album, Kiskeya.
