Lecture | The Object of Desire

Imagine that you were in love with the Golden Gate Bridge? What would this mean to you? What kind of relationship would develop? This talk is an exploration of objectum sexuals--people who form meaningful and erotic relationships with objects. By examining this phenomenon, we can gain insight into how concepts of love, intimacy, agency, and, ultimately, subjectivity are shifting in the twenty-first century. Amber Musser is an assistant professor/Faculty Fellow in Gender Politics. Dr. Musser's work focuses on psychoanalysis, queer affect, and theories of subjectivity. Her dissertation, "On the Subject of Masochism," is a history of the various readings and re-readings that produced masochism's discursive shift from psychiatry to critical and queer theory.

Lecture | The Presence of Divinity in Tibetan Buddhist Ritual

An examination of the performance of ritual amongst Tibetan Buddhist communities in the Western Himalayas. The lecture will look at certain principal ritual actions - such as the recitation of scripture and mantras - in the performance of exorcistic and healing rites, and examine the manner in which these ritual actions are linked by their participants to the question of divine presence, whether in the form of classical tantric evocations of divine power, or in the form of more localised possession events. Dr. Martin A. Mills is Senior Lecturer in the Anthropology of Religion at the University of Aberdeen, Scotland. He is co-director of the Scottish Centre for Himalayan Research, and author of Identity, Ritual and State in Tibetan Buddhism. He has carried out research on the Western Himalayan region of Ladakh and the Tibetan refugee communities of India and Nepal for the last fifteen years.

Author Reading | Photographer Gina LeVay discusses her book Sandhogs

Sandhogs are miners 800 feet below the streets of Manhattan, tunneling bedrock to construct the largest unified infrastructure project in New York City history--the 60-mile-long City Water Tunnel #3. The future of Gotham depends on the efforts of these unseen miners, as this new water channel will supplement the two existing, decrepit tunnels, preventing a potentially catastrophic water shortage. LeVay's work captures with raw and striking beauty the sandhogs at work. These photographs provide a privileged glimpse into a hidden world.

Lecture | The Golden Triangle: Southeastern Asian Drugs and the Global Narcotics Business

Crime pays, and criminals are actors on the world stage whose powerful (if often hidden) role in the modern world has yet to be fully understood. Criminals run globe-spanning businesses that supply narcotics, trafficked people, and illegal services. They bypass national and international regulations on everything from financial transactions to environmental standards. Professor Mark Galeotti, an expert on transnational and organized crime, hosts a series of conversations with scholars and security analysts on the workings of this new “global underworld”: what it does, how it does it, and what this means for us all. Tonight: "The Golden Triangle: Southeastern Asian Drugs and the Global Narcotics Business" by Dr. Ko-lin Chin, professor of criminal justice, Rutgers-Newark, a leading expert on Chinese and Asian organized crime. He discusses his fieldwork in Burma’s infamous Wa region interviewing warlords and drug kingpins for his newest book, The Golden Triangle: Inside Southeastern Asia’s Drug Trade.
