Conference | The Limits of Memory

Recently, much research has been done on memory and the way it functions, circulates, and is mobilized. This research has generally highlighted memory’s positive aspects, construing it as an effective tool for change, healing, understanding, and education. With collective memory in particular, the past is seen as a way to learn lessons and build a better future. While this has inspired new and innovative ways of dealing with memory’s various forms, scholars have tended to focus too often on memory’s positive and empowering aspects, downplaying or disregarding its negative ones. Every act of remembering also implies selective forgetting and reconstruction of the past, often according to present political or cultural needs. This conference addresses some of the limits to theories and practices of memory, focusing on how the uses and abuses of memory are often intimately tied together. Conference speakers include Daniel Levy, Elazar Barkan, Diana Taylor, Jeffrey Olick, Vered Vinitzky-Seroussi, Louis Bickford, Cynthia Milton, Jack Saul, Alex Hinton, and William Hirst.

Opening Reception | Mother: Group Show on the Female Parent

Mother plays a large and complex role in the mass-cultural consciousness. We know her—either separately or simultaneously—as saint, whore, murderess, healer, liar, Fury, life-giver, angel, Joan Crawford…the list grows, indeed, infinitely. What seems to connect all these sundry personifications of Mother, however, is a current of love: be it compassionate, narcissistic, vengeful, monstrous or radiant. This exhibition is all about Mother, and the various artists who love her, fear her, loathe her, are her, or need her. Artists: Nancy Barton; Keil Borrman; Jennie Hagevik Bringaker; Marthe Ramm Fortun; Gabriel Fowler; Jessica Gispert & Andy Slemenda; Michelle Grabner & Brad Killam; Marisa Mandler; Jason Martin; Alex McQuilkin; David Merritt; Charlemagne Palestine; David Rimanelli; David Robbins; Tania Torres-Sanchez; and Patrick Walsh. Opening Reception | Paintings: Natalie Edgar's From Above

An exhibition of recent paintings by Edgar. As a student, she survived the gauntlet of ferocious fighting between the Bauhaus people and the Abstract Expressionists in the Brooklyn College Design Department. There she absorbed exciting, avant garde ideas about abstract painting from Ad Reinhardt, Mark Rothko, Alfred Russell. In 1966, Edgar married the Abstract Expressionist sculptor Philip Pavia and through him she had close friendships with Franz Kline, Willem and Elaine de Kooning, Esteban Vicente, and others. Edgar’s eye for understanding abstraction was further developed from her days writing for ARTnews in the 1960s-1970s and editing It Is Magazine in 1964.

Talk | Punk Politics Presently

A scene of outsiders no more, punk is now aligned with mainstream politics.
