Lecture | Creating an American Home: From Company Towns to Suburban Landscape, 1900-1960

The image that one conjures when thinking about a “Company Town” is usually a stereotypical one. Shabby houses with minimal electricity and no running water, an overpriced company store where only company scrip is accepted, and makeshift communities with no infrastructure for women and children are the hallmark traits that typify our image of company towns. From Pullman, just south of Chicago, to Ford’s Dearborn and Inkster in Michigan to Rockefeller’s Ludlow, Colorado, the history of how workers have lived and worked in these closed communities has been a story shaped by social control, moral uplift, and violence. From the latter part of the nineteenth century through the post World War II era, there have been many different iterations of the company town. Some of them had the makings of Dickensian novels while others were designed to be “Workingmen’s Paradise.” This lecture by Maria Montoya provides a brief overview of the history of company towns in the United States and focuses primarily on some of the largest ones in the American West during the first half of the twentieth century. We will explore why both workers and capitalists so frequently accepted this model of housing and community building, at least until World War II.

Lecture | Aesthetics and U.S. Minority Discourse

This talk by Kandice Chuh of the University of Maryland brings together aesthetic theory and U.S. minority discourse. By doing so, Chuh illuminates the longstanding and intimate relationship between aesthetics and "difference," and shows how the critical vantage of minority discourse revises trenchant understandings of, especially, aesthetic subjectivity. This new understanding serves as a basis for the theorization of a critical subjectivity that responds to the exigencies of both post-identity critique and the neo-liberal university.

Gallery Talk | Photographer Barbara Probst talks about her work

An artist lecture with internationally recognized visual artist Barbara Probst. In Probst’s photographs, the subject of the work becomes the photographic moment of exposure itself. Using a radio-controlled release system, she simultaneously triggers the shutters of several cameras pointed at the same scene from various viewpoints. The resulting sequences of images suspend time and stretch out the split second. The prismatic effect is heightened by the backdrops, which are often enlarged stills from well-known movies. Probst was born in 1964 in Munich, Germany and studied at the Akademie der Bildende Künste, Munich, and the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. She has had numerous gallery exhibitions in Europe and the U.S., and her work was shown in New Photography at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, in 2006. Solo exhibitions include the Museum of Contemporary Photography, Chicago; Madison Museum of Contemporary Art, Wisconsin; Domaine de Kerguehennec, Bignan, France; Stills Gallery, Edinburgh; and Oldenburg Kunstverein, Germany. She lives and works in Munich and New York.

Dance Performance | Excerpts from José Limón Dance Company's La Malinche

Music of the Americas is proud to start a new collaboration with the renowned José Limón Dance Company. In these salons, members of the company will discuss aspects of its work and that of its founder. Limón, born in Culiacán, Mexico in 1908, emigrated to the United States at the age of seven. When he was 20, he moved from Los Angeles to study painting in New York, where he discovered modern dance. After serving in the U.S. Army, Limón formed his own company and, over the next 25 years, established it as one of the major forces in twentieth century dance.
