Lecture | Regulating Mimesis: The Theater of Education in Goethe's “pädagogische Provinz”

In Wilhelm Meisters Wanderjahre, Goethe sketches a “pädagogische Provinz,” a boarding school expanded into a miniature state. Echoing critics of mimesis from Plato to Rousseau, the school’s curriculum contains no classes in the theatrical arts. Rather, all practices attributed to the realm of theater are strictly forbidden. Prof. Martin Jörg Schäfer’s talk addresses Goethe’s notion of a “pädagogische Provinz” within the historical context of the German educational sciences emerging in the late 18th century. Drawing on the theoretical work of Philippe Lacoue-Labarthe, the vocal banishment of all things theatrical is shown to conceal an intimate relation between the realm of education and the realm of theater. Paradoxically, the school can banish theater, since it is itself a ‘theater of education.’ The event is in English.

Opening Reception | David Barnett's Recent Constructions and Collages

A solo exhibition of recent work by gallery artist David Barnett. Barnett's detailed, deftly executed works comment on the ongoing interplay between humanity and technology as well as evoke a Renaissance or Medieval aesthetic, with traditional portraiture and iconic imagery. Recent Constructions and Collages features two and three dimensional work and introduces a further development in Barnett's vocabulary: two-and-a-half dimensional wall-mounted assemblages. Comprised of found objects and mixed media, such as discarded medical instruments, photographic elements and ripped topography; Barnett combines these elements with mechanical parts. Opening Reception | Painting: Todd James' King of the Wild Frontier

A solo exhibition of new work by New York-based artist Todd James. This will be James’ second exhibition with the gallery. In this exhibition, James presents two large new bodies of work. The first is a group of canvases depicting his familiar Somali pirate series. No longer on roughly cut sheets of paper, these oil paintings dominate the gallery with their crisp shapes, large scale and emotive brushwork. The new medium accentuates characteristics of James’ work, namely the seductive colors and fluid lines of its subjects.

Opening Reception | Paintings: Al Held: Black and White 1967

This exhibition highlights early black and white works from a pivotal moment in the artist's career before his monumental black and white paintings of the late '60s and '70s. Here we see the artist as he turns a corner, playing with scale, space and geometry but still dedicated to the physical realities of painting. Held's forms vibrate and collide in space, marking the artist's shift from flat color to optical geometry and tearing open the picture plane of Abstract Expressionism.

Opening Reception | Paintings: Chris Cosnowski's American Metal

Trophies have played a critical role throughout history. Recipients take pleasure in their award, not because the trophy has monetary value, but because it symbolizes success. Those that win them cherish the satisfaction and legacy associated with them. They revel within the symbolism of the prize itself -- victory. Trophies are, and will continue to remain, a visible goal to which any competitor is geared, and harbor the unspoken sacrifices that victory so often demands. Chris Cosnowski utilizes and exploits the intrinsic value and symbolism of these treasured keepsakes. His paintings envision a nostalgic no-holds-barred America. The works allude to the idealism of American values, yet somehow the narratives speak volumes about shifting ideals via the represented objects. What appears to be solid and significant is trumped by the discovery that the metal is an illusion. These beloved objects are not made of gold but merely spray plated plastic with no real weight - an apt metaphor for a country in economic turmoil due to its gratuitous and gluttonous pursuit of all that glitters.

Opening Reception | Sculpture: Eve Ingalls' Out of Place and Time

An exhibition of recent sculpture by Eve Ingalls. This body of work represents Ingalls' most extreme investigation of the state of our environment. Her sculptural forms reveal a world in which climate change is assaulting natural and cultural boundaries. Objects, as well as life forms and processes, are left out of place, unable to perform their usual functions. Discovering and repurposing things has become necessary at every scale. For instance, on a beach almost devoid of shells because of human activity, Ingalls recently observed a hermit crab bearing a blue plastic bottle top instead of a shell as its 'mobile second-hand home.' Shown: "DRAWING BACK TO THE PYRAMID" 2011, HANDMADE ABACA PAPER

Opening Reception | Sculpture: Jeanne Silverthorne's Peripheral Vision

For many years now, Silverthorne has taken the studio as her subject. The physical site of her creativity is also the inspirational probe of her art. Her studio in a 19th century, unrenovated building in Soho with visible wiring, creaky floors, exposed ceiling pipes, bare light bulbs supplies all the images she needs. Her subjects surround and envelope her. Sometimes she works directly with her space. She will make a mold, for example, of her studio floor and then infuse it with symbols of gothic decadence of ruin and collapse, such as dandelions and weeds growing between the floorboards. Born in 1950 in Philadelphia, she received a BA and an MA from Temple University, and has had numerous one-person gallery and museum exhibitions that include PS 1, New York; the Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia; the Whitney Museum of American Art at Philip Morris, New York. Her work is also included in several major museum collections, including the Leeum, Samsung Museum of Art, Seoul, Korea; The Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, TX; Rhode Island School of Design Museum, Providence; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, CA; and the Whitney Museum of American Art, NY. Jeanne Silverthorne is currently teaching at the School of Visual Arts, New York City.

Discussion | Migration, Race, and the Carceral State

The post 9/11 era has drawn increased attention to the ways that immigrant communities are policed, surveilled, criminalized, racialized, and imprisoned. These practices, however, have long histories within both immigrant and native born communities in the United States for whom citizenship has always been constrained. How has the intensification of policing within immigrant communities forced us to re-think these overlapping and connected histories? How does a more nuanced understanding of these histories—and the related relevance of race, gender, and sexuality—inform our work to address policing and prisons and expand our understandings of the Prison Industrial Complex? Join Mizue Aizeki (Organizer and Documentary Photographer), Kenyon Farrow (Writer and Activist), Pooja Gehi (Lawyer and Activist), Priscilla Gonzalez (Domestic Workers United), and Mae Ngai (Columbia University) to address these as well as other questions.

Discussion | It’s Not the Technology!

PixelPress.org director Fred Ritchin and photographer, writer and filmmaker Brian Palmer hope to contribute to the global effort of tracing potential paths out of the current chaotic media environment toward substantive, ethical, and sustainable frameworks and practices that harness the digital without fetishizing technology. Many digital professionals, by choice or necessity, have adopted new modes of capture, image processing and dissemination. Many more work feverishly to create new business models to keep their careers afloat. But the current crisis in these fields is less about the digital than it is about certain enduring and fundamental questions. What is the purpose of the work? Who are these industry professionals in relation to the people, places and events they examine and explore?

Video | Listening Party: Rare Video of Nina Simone

Author Nadine Cohodas presents rare video of Nina Simone in performance to mark the paperback publication of her book Princess Noire: The Tumultuous Reign of Nina Simone; book signing at 8pm. Born Eunice Waymon in Tryon, North Carolina, Nina Simone (1933-2003) began her musical life playing classical piano. A child prodigy, she wanted a career on the concert stage, but when the Curtis Institute of Music rejected her, the devastating disappointment compelled her to change direction. She turned to popular music and jazz but never abandoned her classical roots or her intense ambition. By the age 26, Simone had sung at New York City's venerable Town Hall and was on her way. Tapping into newly unearthed material on Simone's family and career, Nadine Cohodas paints a luminous portrait of the singer, highlighting her tumultuous life, her innovative compositions, and the prodigious talent that matched her ambition. With precision and empathy, Cohodas weaves the story of Simone's contentious relationship with audiences and critics, her outspoken support for civil rights, her two marriages and her daughter, and, later, the sense of alienation that drove her to live abroad from 1993 until her death. Alongside these threads runs a more troubling one: Simone's increasing outbursts of rage and pain that signaled mental illness and a lifelong struggle to overcome a deep sense of personal injustice.

Concert | Burnt Sugar the Arkestra Chamber plays the Steely Dan songbook

Burnt Sugar the Arkestra Chamber is a sprawling band of musicians whose prodigious personnel allows to freely juggle a wide swath of the experimental soul-jazz-hip hop spectrum. "Arkestra Conductor Greg Tate says, "Burnt Sugar got the nerve to claim Sly Stone, Morton Feldman, Billie Holiday, Jimi Hendrix and Jean Luc Ponty as progenitiors. Our player-ranks include known Irish fiddlers, AACM refugees, Afro-punk rejects, unrepentant beboppers, feminist rappers, jitterbugging doowoppers, frankly loud funk-a-teers and rodeo stars of the digital divide." In "Any World I'm Welcome To," Burnt Sugar subverts and lays claim to the Steely Dan songbook, with curation by guitar hero and conceptualist Vernon Reid.
