Gallery Talk | Curator's Tour of Jubilation|Rumination: Life, Real and Imagined

Life is not lived in black and white: reality may have the tinge of dreams and dreams an air of reality. This provocative tension exists between the experiential nature of early American folk art and the fantastical imagery it often displays—between what is real and what is imagined. The same is true of the work of contemporary self-taught artists, which may introduce unique—and sometimes puzzling—expressions that illuminate the iconoclastic nature that is the flip side of the collective American psyche. The viewer is placed in the peculiar but exhilarating position of deciding for him- or herself whether the artwork expresses a disjuncture with reality or an uninhibited embracing of interior life. After all, what is more true, the picture that looks real or the picture that feels real; the observer or the observed?

Opening Reception | Drawings: George Boorujy's Blood Memory

Boorujy’s second solo exhibition with the gallery. In his expansive and finely observed drawings, Boorujy uses a trained naturalist's eye to depict iconic North American animals and landscapes, presenting an intriguing vision of life on the continent that is at once foreign and familiar. George Boorujy was born in 1973 and raised in New Providence, New Jersey, and lives and works in Brooklyn. He attended the University of Miami intending to study marine biology. However, his art courses soon over-took his science concentration earning him a B.F.A in painting in 1996. After graduation he traveled North America eventually landing back in New York City where he studied at the School of Visual Arts, receiving his M.F.A in 2002. Boorujy has exhibited in the U.S. and abroad. Click here to read the full press release.

Workshop | Introduction to How to Communicate with Difficult People—and Enjoy It!

How do you respond to difficult people and situations? How do you ensure that your own needs are met in a way that you don’t regret later? Communicating effectively and compassionately can be one of life’s greatest challenges. People often misunderstand words or intent and hurt each other with careless speech. In this introductory class based on the work of Marshall Rosenberg, author of Nonviolent Communication, learn how to increase our emotional intelligence and improve our communication skills—even with the most difficult people. Learn compassionate listening skills, ways to stay connected during challenging conversations, and how to resist habitual reactions and create closer relationships by transforming judgment and blame into mutual understanding.

Opening Reception | Paintings: Hernan Bas' Occult Contemporary

Drawing from his interest in the supernatural, Hernan Bas responds to the recent proliferation of the occult in mass media with a presentation of new paintings depicting a representation of the devil based on traditional texts and folklore. Playing on the term “Adult Contemporary,” used to describe a light genre of popular music, the title of Bas’ show plays on this act of genre-fication which has made the presence of the occult and supernatural in books, movies, and t.v. accessible to children and young adults, extinguishing any aura of danger or taboo that the occult once held, and consequently, resulting in varying representations and visual depictions of the devil that stray from those detailed in real folklore.

Poetry Reading | Poets Bob Holman and Thomas Fink read their work

Perhaps best known as a leader of the spoken word poetry movement, including slam and hiphop poetries, Holman recently published his fifteenth book, Picasso in Barcelona (Paper Kite Press). This follows A Couple of ways of Doing Something, a collaboration with Chuck Close (Aperture) and Crossing State Lines: An American Renga from Farrar Strauss (co-editor). He teaches at Columbia and NYU and is a founder of the Bowery Poetry Club where he serves as Artistic Director. He is a proponent of poetry-media collaborations, producing five seasons of "Poetry Spots" for WNYC-TV, winning three Emmys; his five-part PBS series, The United States of Poetry, won an INPUT (International Public Television) Prize. He was the host of MTV's "Spoken Word Unplugged," appeared on "HBO Def Poetry Jam," and created the first major spoken word record label, Mouth Almighty/Mercury. His current mission is bringing attention to Endangered Languages -- half the languages on earth will disappear this century. His 3-part series on this subject, "On the Road," is available on LinkTV, and he is in preparation for "Word Up!", a 90-minute special for PBS. Recent travels have been to Wales (he is learning Welsh), and to the griots of West Africa and their counterpart, the azmaris of Ethiopia. He is co-director of the Endangered Language Alliance. Thomas Fink was born in New York City in 1954. He is the author of seven books of poetry, including most recently Peace Conference (Marsh Hawk Press, 2011), Clarity and Other Poems (Marsh Hawk Press, 2008), and a book of collaborative poetry with Maya Diablo Mason, Autopsy Turvy (Meritage Press, 2010). A Different Sense of Power: Problems of Community in Late-Twentieth Century Poetry (FDU Press, 2001) is his most recent book of criticism, and in 2007, he co-edited Burning Interiors: David Shapiro’s Poetry and Poetics (FDU Press). His work has appeared in The Best American Poetry 2007, and his paintings hang in various collections. Fink is a Professor of English at CUNY-LaGuardia, and lives in New York City.

Performance | Spoken Word Work-in-Progress: Formosa by Kelly Tsai

In 1566, Portuguese sailors spotted the island of Taiwan and renamed it "La Ilha Formosa" on their sailing maps. For centuries, the name, Formosa, was used throughout the Western world. From 1967 to 1987, Barbie dolls were solely manufactured in a small industrial town in northern Taiwan. Inspired by the image of men and women working in this Taiwanese factory to create these American icons of beauty, Formosa is a solo show which pushes the questions of global capital, beauty, exploitation, and choice via a poetic narrative and counter-narrative contrasting the experiences of these factory workers with the material creation of this Western icon of beauty. Through poetry, multimedia, movement, and spectacle, she explores how, decades later, global economy leads women of color to strive for these same standards of Western beauty through skin lightening, eyelid surgery, jawbone shaving and other (at times) gruesome forms of self-mutilation. Kelly Zen-Yie Tsai is a Chicago-born, Brooklyn-based Chinese Taiwanese American spoken word artist who fights for cultural pride and survival through how she spits and how she lives. She has been featured at over 300 performances worldwide at venues including the Nuyorican Poets Cafe, the House of Blues, the Apollo Theater, Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center, and three seasons of the award-winning “Russell Simmons Presents HBO Def Poetry.”

Lecture | Subjective Histories of Sculpture

Working in sculptural installations and photography, speaker Nairy Baghramian engages interior design, literature, and art historical debates around minimalism in order to comment on current issues of materiality, manufacture, and display. Her practice examines political and social systems of power, encompassing questions of context, institutional framing and the production and reception of contemporary art. Baghramian's work possesses a sense of immediacy that favors the physicality of the object itself. Her sleek, polished aluminum pieces and cast rubber forms take on a corporeal identity, often arranged in intimate mise en scènes to highlight the absence of a body while imbuing the forms themselves with a degree of bodily presence. Born in Isfahan, Iran in 1971, Baghramian currently lives and works in Berlin. Baghramian's recent exhibitions include Illuminations at the 54th Venice Biennale; a two person show with Phyllida Barlow at Serpentine Gallery in London; Kunsthalle Baden-Baden, Aachen; Entr'acte, at Sculpture Project Munster 07; and the Kunsthalle Basel.

Jazz | SpokFrevo Orquestra, a 17-Piece Jazz Ensemble

Imagine Duke Ellington’s big band blasting through Carnival in Brazil’s Northeast. The thrilling SpokFrevo Orquestra draws inspiration from frevo, an infectious century-old music of elaborate arrangements and indisputable deep roots, taking it from the alleys of Pernambuco and bringing it into the concert hall with blistering, jazz-influenced arrangements, virtuoso playing, and all the fire and frenzy of a street party. Fronted by musical director/saxophonist Maestro Spok, this 17-musician outfit—saxophone, trumpet, trombone, rhythm sections, bass, and guitar—reinvents tradition without subverting it.
