Opening Reception | Consent, an Exhibit on Our Private Relationship with Porn

Have you ever opened up to anyone about your private relationship with pornography? Despite the common knowledge that the use of porn, particularly online, is nearly ubiquitous—according to 2010 statistics compiled by OnlineMBA.com, 25% of search engine requests are for porn and over 28,000 people are looking at online porn at any given second—few of us think or talk about it honestly. In the internet age, although porn is easier than ever to access, it is also easier to consume surreptitiously before "x-ing out" and deleting the web history. If the statistics are even close to correct, most of us are consenting cogs in the wheels of the porn industry's massive turnout, yet we often show a very different face to the public than the one we put on when we are alone with adult entertainment. The gap between our intimate moments and our public reactions to porn is rarely bridged with conversation or dialogue. Consent aims to close the gap between what we think about porn and what we say—to collapse the space between the "them" of the porn industry and the "us" of the consumer. Featuring interviews with actors, directors, activists, and consumers including: Sinnamon Love, Oriana Small, Nyomi Banxxx, Cindy Gallop, Madison Young, Mr. Marcus, April Flores, Daniel Reilly, Lux Alptraum, Danny Wylde, Kelly Shibari, Natasha Star, and Lynsey G.

Discussion | Food History: Why Should We Care?

Food history has become a hot topic in popular media, as the growing number of book, articles, and TV shows indicates. At a time when food systems are rapidly changing, and not always for the better, people are interested in the origins of what they eat, what people before them ate, and what they are likely to eat in the future. To celebrate the U.S. publication of Berg Publishers’ six-volume Cultural History of Food, this panel gathers contributors to discuss what food history brings to both history and food studies as disciplines and to contemporary debates about food. Can understanding the historical dynamics of food culture, production, and consumption help us make better choices today? Panelists include: Paul Freedman, professor of history, Yale University; Amy Bentley, associate professor of food studies, NYU; and Amy Trubek, associate professor of nutrition and food sciences, University of Vermont. Food Studies coordinator Fabio Parasecoli moderates.

Opening Reception | Sculpture and Installation by Virginia Overton

In her sculpture and installation works, Virginia Overton employs readily available or repurposed building materials as well as common found imagery in reaction to the particular conditions of the exhibition space and its environs. She has developed a sculptural vocabulary that uses and reuses these materials and images. While the work often incorporates large-scale elements, Overton still allows for a sense of ad hoc fragility in the provisional relationships she sets up between the architecture and her materials. The heightened awareness of the weight-bearing loads and the pull of gravity underscore how the materials have been asked to perform, holding traces of past uses and process to become more than just “raw” material.

Talk | Paul Volcker, Former Chairman of the Federal Reserve: current state of our economy

Financial legend Paul Volcker, former Chairman of The Federal Reserve, will talk about the current state of our economy. This lecture is made possible by the Benjamin Menschel Distinguished Lectureship, established with a generous grant from The Horace W. Goldsmith Foundation. In its 11th year, this highly regarded lecture series has provided a public platform for some of the most renowned scientists, historians, economists and intellectuals of our time. Paul A. Volcker was chairman of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System from August 1979 to August 1987 under Presidents Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan. He is credited with playing the leading role in ending a period of high and rising inflation and restoring a base for sustained growth. Additionally, he was the Chairman of the Economic Recovery Advisory Board under President Barack Obama from February 2009 until February 2011. The eponymous Volker Rule, which is part of the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act enacted in 2010, seeks to limit proprietary trading by banks. Discussion | Dialogues in the Visual Arts: Transnationalism and Women Artists in the Diaspora

New York is now home to many women artists who transcend borders and who form an international feminist diaspora. Many artists come from countries in the Middle East where it is difficult for women to exhibit and contribute to the cultural sphere, but also from a Middle East country like Israel which offers equality for women. Others come from countries in Asia, Africa, South America, and even Europe. Many work from a feminist perspective; their work addresses gender, the environment, consumerism, and the relationship between the individual and the state. What attracts them to New York besides the opportunity to live in a city that is at the center of the art world? Are they attracted by a multinational atmosphere in the New York art world? Do they feel that New York accepts political and activist feminism in the visual arts? What are the sources for their feminism? Has their presence and the ideas they bring with them influenced the visual arts discourse in the city? Does living in New York affect their work as artists? These are some of the issues which this panel will address. Reception follows. Moderators: Judith K. Brodsky and Julie Lohnes. Panelists: Cui Fei, Ofri Cnaani, Negar Ahkami, Midori Yoshimoto and Tatiana Flores. Discussant: Ferris Olin. Image: Negar Ahkami, Backsplash, 2010, acrylic and glitter on gessoed panel 60 x 48. Author Reading | Writers Lauren Groff and Megan Mayhew Bergman read their work

Richard Russo says of Lauren Groff's new novel: "Richly peopled and ambitious and oh, so lovely, Lauren Groff's Arcadia is one of the most moving and satisfying novels I've read in a long time. It's not possible to write any better without showing off." And Jill McCorkle says of Megan Mayhew Bergman's book: "A big-hearted collection of stories--each one a precise and compassionate study of human life, the changes and obstacles--all carefully housed under the miracles and marvels of nature. Megan Mayhew Bergman is a brilliantly gifted writer who recognizes and highlights life's fragilities in a way that will leave your heart aching while also finding those bits of hilarity and absurdity that bring uniqueness to each and every creature."
