Talk | Retro in Contemporary Bombay Cinema

Indian cities in the last two decades have witnessed major transformations. The rise of innovative architectural designs, new forms of infrastructure and the ubiquitous presence of technological gadgets have marked this moment as globalization. This transformation has created a dense visual and aural landscape in which the sound of the cell phone follows us everywhere along with new surfaces and objects that pervade the city. The intoxicating sensorium generated by urban renewal, shop signage, branding, and the power of light is making the ruins of the old industrial city slowly fade away. It is this juncture that has triggered off a cinematic re-visiting of Bombay’s pre-globalized urban form. Milan Luthria’s Once Upon a Time in Mumbai (2010), Chandan Arora’s Striker (2010) and Mahesh Manjrekar’s City of Gold (2010) are examples of films that have created vivid images of Bombay before the advent of globalization. These urban 'sets' are either constructed in studios or generated through a transformation of real locations, to adapt to the time of the films. Production designers work with a material memory of the past – magazines, films, photographs, memoirs, paintings, architectural manuals, and music. The retro past is always a recent past, a nostalgic admiration for a world that has just passed us by. This paper engages with the material, cultural and historical transactions involved in the recreation of India’s best known city before the entry of globalization. About the speaker: Ranjani Mazumdar is associate professor of cinema studies at the School of Arts and Aesthetics, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, and the author of Bombay Cinema: An Archive of the City.

Lecture | The Information Economy of Renaissance Florence

A lecture by Prof. Stephen Milner, The University of Manchester. In the history of the late medieval and Renaissance revival of interest in the classics much has been made of the recovery of the classical rhetorical tradition and the renewed emphasis on the importance of oratory and public speaking in the cities of the Italian peninsula. This paper seeks to add a previously neglected public voice to the rhetorical canon by focusing attention on the town criers of Renaissance Florence. At regular intervals the city's judicial magistracies issued calls for information regarding criminal activity through the public declamation of bandi, official announcements made from a number of sites around the city. The survival in written form of these oral proclamations not only sheds light on a range of everyday activities which escaped the eye of contemporary police officials but also reveals fascinating insights into the information economy of a premodern city in the days before surveillance cameras. Judge for yourself whether the relation between voice, knowledge and power is any different now from back in the fifteenth-century.

Today women’s expanded access to institutions of power is widely believed to herald the "end of sexism," and thus of the need for a feminist movement. Yet many women writers, whether or not they identify as "feminists," continue to voice concerns about women’s situation and envision new avenues for women in writing and publishing. At Women Writing in the Age of Post-Feminism, Shelley Jackson, Cate Marvin, Camille Rankine, and Ann Snitow discuss the politics of identity and representation among contemporary women writers.

Talk | Paul Fitzgerald & Elizabeth Gould discuss their book Crossing Zero: The AfPak War at the Turning Point of American Empire

The authors, a husband-and-wife team, take a critical and well-researched look at U.S. policy towards Afghanistan and Pakistan and discuss the fight for control of the border region between the Pashtuns and the Panjabis. The contentious border separating Pakistan from Afghanistan is known as the Durand line but referred to by the military and intelligence community as "Zero line." The war in Afghanistan has become the most complex foreign policy problem the United States has ever faced, spreading into Pakistan and involving the conflicting interests of Russia, India, China and Iran. The journalists focus on the nuances of the Obama administration's evolving military and political strategy, those who have been chosen to implement it, and the long-term consequences for the U.S. and the region.
