Gallery Talk | Curator's Tour of Jubilation|Rumination: Life, Real and Imagined

Life is not lived in black and white: reality may have the tinge of dreams and dreams an air of reality. This provocative tension exists between the experiential nature of early American folk art and the fantastical imagery it often displays—between what is real and what is imagined. The same is true of the work of contemporary self-taught artists, which may introduce unique—and sometimes puzzling—expressions that illuminate the iconoclastic nature that is the flip side of the collective American psyche. The viewer is placed in the peculiar but exhilarating position of deciding for him- or herself whether the artwork expresses a disjuncture with reality or an uninhibited embracing of interior life. After all, what is more true, the picture that looks real or the picture that feels real; the observer or the observed?

Discussion | Elections in Africa: Mali 2012

With two democratically elected presidents since the revolution of 1991, Mali has been celebrated as a democratic miracle, despite low voter turnout. The upcoming election, without an incumbent, will be an important test for the citizens' level of participation and the recomposition of the political field along new cleavages after a decade of presidential-inspired ideology of consensus. This panel discussion is part of the Institute of African Studies' 2011-2012 series focusing on elections in Africa. It is sponsored by the Institute of African Studies, the School of International and Public Affairs, and SIPA Pan-African Network (SPAN). The panel will be followed by the film, "Bamako sigi-kan = Bamako's pact."

Opening Reception | ZATO - Secret Soviet Cities during the Cold War, an Exhibition on Politics, Urbanism and Cartographic Manipulation

ZATO - Secret Soviet Cities during the Cold War, curated by Xenia Vytuleva, explores the dynamics between politics, urbanism, and cartographic manipulation. Nameless, not shown on maps, ZATO were sites of highly secretive military and scientific research and production. Built in the remote areas of the Soviet Empire, they followed a unique architectural program - inspired by ideal cities, based on perfect geometric plans, articulated by progressive modernist architectural language, reflecting the ideology of the Party. However, these “realized utopias” were camouflaged and blurred into the environment. Their essential isolation from the entire Soviet context, including special food and consumer supplements given as rewards for the secrecy and “otherness” of the sites, had an unexpected impact on ZATO’s cityscape.

Forum | Business History Forum

Railroads dominated British investors' portfolios of American corporate securities from the mid-19th century until the eve of World War I. Nevertheless, by the end of this period, there had been a substantial diversification of these portfolios to include securities from other types of American enterprises. The trend began with the end of the Civil War but it was the dramatic and unprecedented burst of enthusiasm by British investors for American industrial companies, especially breweries, in the late 1880s that really caught the attention of contemporaries. These "Anglo-American" industrial securities on the London Stock Exchange tell us much more about what British investors wanted than what American companies needed.
