Workshop | Introduction to Writing For Insight: A Five-Step Path to Wisdom

Drawing from his book Ethical Wisdom: What Makes Us Good, Mark Matousek’s course for writers of all levels is designed to teach us how to use writing as a tool for opening the mind similarly to how yoga opens the body. Guilt, anger, greed, envy, etc., co-exist in us alongside altruism, creativity and love; writing can help us understand our inner dynamics and accentuate the positive sides of our natures. Through guided writing exercises, group interaction, and instructor-led self-inquiry, you will examine five key aspects of moral temperament with which each of us is born and learn how to explore these hard-wired wisdom “channels” in writing to help us strengthen our innate wisdom and make better choices in our lives.

Discussion | A New Look at Global Ecology

Independence and autonomy, freedom and achievement are nearly mythic hallmarks of success in American society. But what if this mindset creates the illusion that we are separate from our surroundings in a way that prevents us from seeing our connection to and subsequent influence on the world around us? What if this misperception is at the heart of threats to our global resources? Following Einstein’s reasoning that “no problem can be solved by the thinking that has created it,” this interdisciplinary panel discusses how our thinking can both prevent and facilitate solutions to complex global problems. Panelists include Nora Bateson, the maker of the critically acclaimed film An Ecology of Mind; Stephanie Pfirman, Hirschorn Professor of Environmental and Applied Sciences; co-founder of Greenpeace Rex Weyler; and Barbara Woike, Associate Professor of Psychology.

Concert | Kirtan Music

Devadas has released two cds, "Ocean - Songs for Amma" and "Shine Shine On" and is currently recording and singing anywhere and everywhere they'll have him. A Bhajan is any type of Indian devotional song. It has no fixed form: it may be as simple as a mantra or kirtan or as sophisticated as the dhrupad or kriti with music based on classical ragas and talas. It is normally lyrical, expressing love for the Divine. The name, a cognate of bhakti, meaning religious devotion, suggests its importance to the bhakti movement.
