Lecture | The Web That Wasn't: Forgotten Forebears of the Internet

If the history of technology teaches us anything, it is that the best technology does not always win. Today, the World Wide Web has become the dominant platform for transmitting knowledge across the globe. But in the years leading up to Tim Berners-Lee's world-changing invention, several pioneering information scientists were exploring a wide range of other concepts that resembled - and in some ways surpassed - the Web as we know it today. What lessons can we learn from these alternative technological visions? In this presentation, Alex Wright will explore the heritage of these almost-forgotten systems in search of promising ideas left by the historical wayside, focusing on the pioneering work of Paul Otlet, Vannevar Bush, and Doug Engelbart; forebears of the 1960s and 1970s like Ted Nelson, Andries van Dam, and the Xerox PARC team, and more recent forays such as Brown's Intermedia system.

Lecture | The Rhetoric of Economic Policy

Numbers play a central role in economic policy debates. An ecosystem of analysts, journalists, and policymakers ponders how policy choices might affect unemployment, growth, tax burdens, deficits, and other measures of economic performance. But numbers are only part of the story. Language also plays a key role in these debates. In this lecture, Donald Marron will explore how word choice, framing, and other rhetorical choices influence economic policy discussions.

Lecture | Creativity and the Purpose of Art in Aristotle's Poetics

With Jean-Marc Narbonne. Creativity has often been considered a questionable concept when applied to Greek antiquity. By investigating which type of beauty Aristotle is advocating in the case of poetry and which concept of art he has in mind when he analyses the nature of this very atypical knowledge, the talk will try to show in what sense one can effectively speak of some sort of ‘innovation’ or ‘creativity’ in this groundbreaking ancient text.

Opening Reception | Group Show: Body Politic

The human body is one of the most articulate and simultaneously confounding subjects that artists depict. Yet the schools of thought that guide figurative painting siphon artists into narrowly focused camps with controlled and codified vocabularies. This upcoming exhibition featuring more than twenty established and emerging artists aims to upset this status quo by amplifying the cacophonic surge of artists' voices speaking through the body. Unexpected interpretations of the figure breathe new life into an historic subject, with unexpected and surprising outcomes. Artists include Shawn Barber, Larissa Bates, Sarah Bereza, Saskia Ozol Eubanks, Christian Fagerlund, Renee Foulks, Robyn Frank, Jane Hamill, Alex Kanevsky, Steve Ketchum, Oh Joon B. Kwon, Jerome Lagarrigue, Allison Maletz, Nat Meade, Jenny Morgan, Jeff Muhs, Ethan Murrow, Reuben Negron, Scott Noel, Tim Okamura, Holly Ann Sailors, and Melanie Vote.

Opening Reception | Sculpture: Diego Perrone's Scultura che non sia conchiglia non canta

Perrone presents two new bodies of work, both revolving around the appropriation of specific elements from sculptural and architectonic traditions. A series of airbrush paintings on PVC mark the beginning of an investigation into the sculpture of Adolfo Wildt (1868 – 1931, Milan), an Italian sculptor from the early 20th century noted for his Gothic influences. Little known, Wildt represents an important moment in Italian art, not only for his experimentation with the grotesque and symbolic, but also for his influence as a teacher to artists such as Lucio Fontana and Fausto Melotti, among others.

Discussion | More Hacking - Design

In all creative fields, hacking can mean using one's own skills to affect or alter an environment in order to gain greater access. Employing an unconventional approach that is rarely revealed to (or fully understood by) the outside world, hackers utilize strategies that open up controlled apparatuses, such as traditional approaches, environments, and other tools, to achieve revolutionary work. Bringing together three voices, in fields ranging from the visual to the culinary, the series More Hacking shares how a range of cultural producers have hacked traditional closed systems and thought-processes within their respective industries to create emergent possibilities for free exchange.
