Discussion | Artist Margaret Evangeline discusses her book Sabachthani: Why Have You Forsaken Me?

Sabachthani: Why Have You Forsaken Me? is American artist Margaret Evangeline's powerful new monograph that is a meditation on grief, faith, and doubt during wartime, and a reflection of the artist's personal anguish sitting vigil for her son while on his third tour in Iraq. On the occasion of the release of Sabachthani, the book will be the subject of a panel discussion one day after the 10th anniversary of the start date of The Iraq War. Evangeline, along with curators and art critics Dominique Nahas and Lilly Wei, and writer and poet Jonathan Goodman, will talk about art's potential to mirror social issues without subverting the aesthetic nature of art making. Symposium | The Middlebrow

This symposium will examine the cultural phenomenon of the middlebrow. During the height of middlebrow culture—the postwar era of the Book-of-the-Month Club—critical mandarins made great fun of the cultural aspirations of middleclass Americans. But if, as many argue, we have since undergone a great cultural leveling, is that entirely for the good? Do we miss the middlebrow? Or does it still exist in the form of high-end television and “accessible” literary fiction? Discussion with literary critic Christine Smallwood, and critic and editor Jennifer Szalai. Moderated by Christopher Beha, associate editor, Harper’s Magazine.
