Screening | CineFest 2015: Hispanic Film Festival

CineFest 2015 will feature four films and one documentary covering a broad spectrum of topics: immigration, environmental exploitation, coming of age and cultural identities. We hope that through these films we give voice to the unheard stories of many different cultures in the Spanish-speaking world. 5:15pm: Opening Remarks 5:30-6:45 p.m.: Las Analfabetas / Illiterate (1:13) Director: Moisés Sepúlveda / Chile - Ximena is an illiterate woman in her fifties who has learned to live on her own in order to keep her illiteracy a secret. Jackeline is a young unemployed elementary school teacher who tries to convince Ximena to take reading classes. Persuading her proves to be an almost impossible task, until one day Jackeline finds something Ximena has been keeping as her only treasure since she was a child: a letter Ximena’s father left when he abandoned her many years before. The two women embark on a learning journey where they discover that there are many ways of being illiterate, and that not knowing how to read is just one of them. 7:00-8:35 p.m.: Pelo Malo / Bad Hair (1:33) Director: Mariana Rondón / Venezuela - A nine-year-old boy’s preening obsession with straightening his hair elicits a tidal wave of homophobic panic in his hard-working mother, in this tender but clear-eyed coming-of-age tale. Junior is a beautiful boy, with big brown eyes, a delicate frame, and a head of luxurious dark curls. But Junior aches to straighten those curls, to acquire a whole new look befitting his emerging fantasy image of himself as a long-haired singer. As the opportunity approaches to have his photo taken for the new school year, that ache turns into a fiery longing. Junior’s mother, Marta (Samantha Castillo), is barely hanging on. The father of her children has died, she recently lost her job as a security guard, and she now struggles to put a few arepas on the table for Junior and his baby brother.

Film | PBS Documentary: Carlos Rendón Zipagauta's Biblioburro: The Donkey Library (2011)

The story of a librarian — and a library — like no other. A decade ago, Colombian grade-school teacher Luis Soriano was inspired to spend his weekends bringing a modest collection of precious books, via two hard-working donkeys, to the children of Magdalena Province’s poor and violence-ridden interior. As Soriano braves armed bands, drug traffickers, snakes and heat, his library on hooves carries an inspirational message about education and a better future for Colombia. His simple yet extraordinary effort has attracted worldwide attention— and imitators — but his story has never been better told than in this heartwarming yet unsentimental film. 60 min.

Discussion | Celebrating Contemporary Guatemalan Art: Conversations with Artists and Curators

In recent years Guatemalan artistic production has been extremely powerful, with an emergence of both critical and whimsical artistic practices responding to the violence, repression and historical memory of the previous decades in Guatemala, but also its unique sense of contemporaneity, indigeneity and radical urban imagination. Contemporary Guatemalan artists such as Benvenuto Chavajay, Regina José Galindo, Jorge de León and many others are recognized widely not only in the context of Central/Latin America, but receive acclaim on the world stage, while contemporary urban art spaces like NuMu and Proyectos Ultravioleta are notable for their inventive curatorial practices and creative public engagement.

Performance | Performance Art: MV Carbon and Richard Garet's Permeable Rites

Carbon and Garet, joining forces for first time, will immerse the audience in sonic, visual and atmospheric phenomena. MV Carbon is an experimental artist living in Brooklyn, NY. She uses sonics, physicality, projection and sculpture to deviate space and to detach the viewer from "normalcy”. Her current work refers to magic, multidimensional travel, invocation, interchangeability and the externalization of the neurological mechanism. She intends to provoke extrasensory awareness through disorienting “reality”. Richard Garet is a multimedia artist living and working in NY. His work focuses on modified environments, installations, sound art, audiovisual screenings, and sound and audiovisual performance. Garet constructs intimate situations that draw attention to the processes of perception, which activate sensorial, physical, and psychological phenomena that reflect on the nature and experience of time.
