Symposium | Beyond Normal: The Fantasy Bodies of National Culture

A symposium featuring andré carrington, Julie Passanante Elman, and Ramzi Fawaz. How do popular culture and mass media shape our notions of what it means to be healthy, happy, safe, and human? And how might imaginative genres like fantasy and speculative fiction break the mold of the “normal life”? This symposium brings together three scholars, working at the intersections of critical race, disability, and gender and sexuality studies to consider how the misfit, freak, speculative, and mutant bodies of American culture are variously contained or authorized by different twentieth century and contemporary media and social forms. Genres and affective modes like fantasy, speculative fiction, and enchantment will be explored.

Master Class | Oscar Ghiglia: Guitar Master Class

The Italian guitarist, Oscar Ghiglia was born of an artistic family - his father and grandfather were both famed painters and his mother an accomplished pianist. Oscar Ghiglia had to choose between a path strewn with brushes and colours and a world cut into harmony and melody. Though his early choice produced a few hundred water colours and a number of oil paintings, he soon realised music was his way. For this decision he thanks his father, who one day made him pose for a painting showing a guitarist. For this he had to hold his father’s guitar, a companion to his artistic musings in front of his forming works. This painting was the start to a lifetime of disciplined dedication to music.

Lecture | 'And we kissed, as though nothing could fall': David Bowie's Berlin Trilogy

A talk by film researcher Mary Wild. The recent departure of David Bowie, music’s persona-shifting powerhouse of innovation, left planet Earth feeling decidedly blue. The South Londoner’s indelible impact reaches beyond music – he influenced the fields of fashion, cinema, fine arts, pop video, and theatre; we have lost a veritable multi-media virtuoso. When fame, drug addiction, and mental distress took their toll in the mid-1970s, Bowie retreated to West Berlin, immersing himself in the exciting cultural climate of the divided city that inspired a ground-breaking triptych of recordings: Low, Heroes, and Lodger. Wild’s lecture will focus on David Bowie’s "Berlin Trilogy" as an era of legendary musical collaborations that evolved his artistry to an astonishing level of sophistication and intellectual depth.
