Book Discussion | Book Discussion: Americordo: The Italian Jewish Exiles in America by Gianna Pontecorboli

Pontecorboli's book is a long overdue account of a lesser known aspect of the Italian anti-Jewish persecution: the exile of Italian Jews to America. Forced to the US by the Fascist persecutions during the 1930's and 1940's, roughly two thousand Italian Jews landed in America and continued their work in a wide range of fields, from mathematics and biology to medicine, music, banking, textile manufacturing, art and antiques. Pontecorboli retraces the threads of their stories, their strategies to exit Italy, find a visa to the US and their first steps in the new world. Discussion | South Asian Trans-Urbanisms: 21st Century India

We’re all familiar with the brand of 21st century India: the world’s largest democracy, a burgeoning BRIC economy, and, as one famous campaign slogan described it, India Shining. But what do these promises of possibility look like if you’re one of the subcontinents more marginal inhabitants--say, a poor laborer in Delhi, a woman fighting gender inequity, or a Kashmiri separatist? Two writers investigate South Asian cities through rich journalistic storytelling and creative nonfiction: New York Times reporter Somini Sengupta, who tells the story of how India’s youth are confronting the country’s opportunity and its turmoil, and Githa Hariharan, whose essays weave together the psychogeography of spaces both South Asian (Delhi, Mumbai, Kashmir) and beyond (Palestine, Algeria, Tokyo). Moderated by Jyothi Natarajan.

Staged Reading | The Human Crisis: Camus' Famous Lecture 70 Years Later, Featuring Oscar-Nominated Actor Viggo Mortensen

Albert Camus originally delivered this lecture on La Crise de l’homme on March 28, 1946, to a very full house at Columbia’s McMillin Academic Theatre, on his first and only trip to the United States. 70 years later, to celebrate Camus’ visit to New York and Columbia, his lecture will be delivered in a dramatic reading by the actor Viggo Mortensen, in a version newly translated into English by Alice Kaplan. The event will be introduced by Souleymane Bachir Diagne and by Alice Kaplan, who will share new research from her forthcoming book, Looking for the Stranger: Albert Camus and the Life of a Literary Classic, to bring alive Camus’ U.S. visit and provide a context for his lecture. Following the reading there will be a panel discussion about Albert Camus in New York. After the reading, Bachir Diagne and Alice Kaplan will be joined by Viggo Mortensen and Madeleine Dobie for a panel discussion about Albert Camus’ influence, his impressions of the U.S., and his reception in this country as a leading voice of the postwar generation of French intellectuals.
