Tour | Tour of Gracie Mansion, Home of New York's Mayors

In 1799, a prosperous New York merchant named Archibald Gracie built a country house overlooking a bend in the East River, five miles north of the then-New York City limits. Little did he know that, more than 200 years later, his home would be serving as the official residence of the First Family of New York City - a place where history is made, not merely recorded. As a historic house museum run by the Parks Department, sitting on 11 acres of grounds now known as Carl Schurz Park, Gracie Mansion has served as the home of 10 mayors, beginning first with Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia in 1942. Today, Gracie Mansion is occupied by the de Blasio family, which has opened its doors in the spirit of the administration's motto: one city, rising together. In keeping with that theme, Mayor de Blasio and First Lady Chirlane McCray have introduced a new art installation, titled “Windows on the City: Looking Out at Gracie’s New York.” ,br> Tours take place every Tuesday at 10am, 11am, 2pm, and 3pm.

Discussion | Hollywood in the New Cold War Era - The Perfect Enemy: Long Live the Cold War

Twenty-five years after the end of the Cold War, the West again finds itself on the verge of a new cold war, with conflicts in Ukraine and Syria at the center. For Hollywood especially, the Russia-as-perpetual-enemy trope (as stand-in for the Red Scare), lends itself well to explaining contemporary political contexts in popular media. This event is the third of a series of events that will examine Hollywood in the New Cold War Era. In this event, a panel discussion examines the villification of Russia by Hollywood, followed by an opportunity to engage in a discussion with faculty Peter Lucas, Cyril Ghosh, and Deirdre Boyle.

Discussion | Special Effects: Art, Belief and Audiences

In early 20th century Russia, circus performers were referred to as "eccentrics," a term picked up by the St. Petersburg-based avant-garde group of artists, writers, and filmmakers who comprised the "Factory for the Eccentric Actor" or FEKS. For them, using stunts, gags, and tricks became ways to address the changing pace of life with new developments in technology and media culture. This panel discussion extends from these ideas, which inform the concurrent exhibition The Eccentrics at SculptureCenter, and features two of the exhibiting artists. Participants: Margot Bouman, Assistant Professor of Visual Culture Sanya Kantarovsky, artist Ruba Katrib, exhibition curator Jeanine Oleson, artist and Assistant Professor of Photography
