Finally, the class will turn to the issue of the global governance of trade, and consider the impact of the WTO, the TPP, NAFTA, the general rise of nationalism among industrialized countries, and the likely shifts in international trade and exchange rate policy that may occur with the political change in the US.

Jazz | Wild Lines: Emily Dickinson Reimagined

Award winning soprano saxophonist/composer Jane Ira Bloom presents her new work for jazz quartet and spoken word, inspired by the poetry of Emily Dickinson. Bloom’s reimagining of Dickinson was ignited when she learned that the poet was a pianist and improviser, reaffirming Bloom’s intuitive connection to the jazz-like quality of Dickinson’s writing. This is a collaboration across time between two pioneering women artists - one a 21st century jazz musician, the other a 19th century visionary poet. Poetry recitation from actor Deborah Rush will echo and intermingle with music performed by the Jane Ira Bloom quartet featuring jazz artists Dawn Clement (piano), Mark Helias (bass), and Bobby Previte (drums).

Play | Twelfth Night: Shakespeare from The Public Theater's Mobile Unit

A vibrant new production of the gender-bending, heart-mending comedy Twelfth Night. When a young shipwrecked immigrant named Viola takes a chance on the “wet foot, dry foot” policy of the mid-‘90s and washes up amidst the shore of glitzy Illyria, Florida, she finds herself a stranger in a fabulously strange new land. Thinking her twin brother has drowned, Viola throws herself into a new gig as assistant to Orsino, a wealthy Floridian with a serious case of love sickness for a wealthy lady, Olivia. Having disguised herself as a boy to become Orsino’s right hand man, Viola (now Cesario) is tasked with delivering his adoring valentines. But as Viola woos in her boss’s name, she falls head over spiky heels for the man himself, while Olivia turns her affections to the intriguing young messenger boy, Cesario (also Viola). Set to the rhythms of house, Cuban and ‘90s beats, Saheem Ali directs this colorful comedy about the power of new people and new experiences that throw the world into beautiful disarray, and open hearts and minds to the possibility of love. Continuing its commitment to bringing free Shakespeare to the community and strengthening audience engagement with the arts, The Public Theater will mount its mobile unit again this spring. Now in its seventh year, the Mobile Unit’s free tour celebrates the 60th Anniversary of the mobiler unit bringing Shakespeare to audiences who have limited or no access to the arts.

Lecture | The Myth and Dilemma of Public Design

Kin Wai Michael Siu will discuss the term “public” from the perspective of its more complex Chinese language equivalent—公共(gōng gòng), examining how the interpretation of these constituent terms influences the design of public spaces. He will suggest that, for design researchers and practitioners, a re-thinking of the relationship between gōng and gòng can result in better public living environments. Kin Wai Michael Siu is Chair Professor of Public Design and leader of the Public Design Lab at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University.
