Workshop | Deep Yoga and Journaling

Sharyn Hahn lead you through some warm-up poses and a vinyasa flow as well as several short meditations, creative visualization, and intention-setting writing or sketching activities. You will leave feeling more flexible, relaxed, energized, with a mantra that you can carry with you throughout the week. Please bring a yoga mat if you have one, and they do have some if you need to borrow one for the class. Also bring a journal and something to write with. You will be writing a few times during the class, and if you prefer to sketch or want to do both, that is fine. Wear comfortable clothing, and feel free to bring a warm or cool drink to keep you hydrated (with a secure lid). All levels are welcome. If you have never done yoga you will be able to participate as well.

Lecture | Bankruptcy, Exile and Bonfires: The Fate of Florentine Art under Savonarola

In the last decade of the century, the Medici went bankrupt and were exiled from Florence and fiery preacher Savonarola became "dictator" of the Florence--until he criticized the notoriously corrupt pope, Rogerio Borgia (Alexander VI), resulting in his public execution. It must have seemed like it was all over for the Renaissance (in actuality a temporary lull -- within ten years the High Renaissance of Leonardo, Michelangelo and Raphael had fully flowered). The exhibition consists of new mixed-media collages made of objects, photographs, graphical scores, and sound compositions. Roberts defines her process as “panoramic sound quilting” – assembling visual and musical works illuminating personal histories against a broader national landscape. Discussion | Festival Neue Literatur presents We Are Family: Blood-Brothers and Strong Mothers

How does a family, whether one we are born into or one we choose, provide a bulwark against what may be a hostile or indifferent world outside? Do the relationships we make as adults matter more than the people we are related to? And how does the conception of family change when we are living in a country far from our so-called home? Tradition, brotherhood, and rebellion – this panel will explore these themes and more, tracing stories from Iran to Kosovo to Hannover to China and celebrating how literature can provide us with an extended family that is only limited by the size of our bookshelf. Featuring Nava Ebrahimi, Meral Kureyshi, Lisa Ko, Philipp Winkler, and moderated by Ruth Franklin.
