Symposium | Conflicting Relations: Indigeneity in Finland  (in-person and online)

This conversation brings together institutions, curators, and artists whose practices go beyond hospitality and act as correctives to prescribed host and guest hierarchies, on intimate and infrastructural levels. Following this discussion, Matti Aikio expands on his research on the so-called “neo-Lapp movement” in Finland and settler-colonial attempts at claiming Indigenous identity. Taking into consideration Indigenous sovereignty and self-determination, Aikio looks past individual violations to question the structural and large-scale implications of this movement as a counter-strategy to the political mobilization of the Sámi.

Workshop | Chinese Paper-Cutting Workshop

Artist Xiyadie leads a rare in-person workshop to learn the art of Chinese paper-cutting, on occasion of the current exhibition Xiyadie: Queer Cut Utopias. Learning the skill from his mother at a young age, Xiyadie originated his singular artistic language in the more traditional technique of paper-cutting artist. He is the first known Chinese paper-cut artist to publicly depart from the folk-art context as well as the only paper-cutting artist in mainland China to engage with queer themes. His expertise in paper-cutting has allowed him to develop intricate compositions that embrace the ancient art form while subverting it with defiant yet joyful expressions of individualism, deploying traditional techniques to articulate, destigmatize, and celebrate queerness. This workshop is recommended for participants 18 years and older. All art materials will be provided. Mandarin/English interpretation will be available during this event.

Classical Music | Works by Beethoven

The New York Classical Players. Program Beethoven (1770-1827) Piano Trio in B-flat major, Op. 97, "Archduke" (1811) "Eyeglasses Duo" for Viola and Cello in E flat major, WoO 32 Piano Trio in D major, Op. 70 No. 1, "Ghost" (1809) About the Program Piano Trio in B-flat major, Op. 97, "Archduke" (1811) was dedicated to Archduke Rudolph of Austria. Rudolf was an amateur pianist and a patron, friend, and composition student of Beethoven. Beethoven dedicated about a dozen compositions to him. The Archduke Trio was written late in Beethoven's "middle period." It follows the traditional four movement structure with sonata form in the first and rondo sonata form in the last movement. It also allows for a more prominent part for the piano than previous compositions. "Eyeglasses Duo" is the nickname, the short title for the Duet "with two eyeglasses obligato". Piano Trio in D major, Op. 70 No. 1, "Ghost" (1809) is one of Beethoven's best known works. The D major trio features themes found in the second movement of Beethoven's Symphony No. 2. The All-Music Guide states that "because of its strangely scored and undeniably eerie-sounding slow movement, it was dubbed the 'Ghost' Trio. The name has stuck with the work ever since. The ghostly music may have had its roots in sketches for a Macbeth opera that Beethoven was contemplating at the time."

Discussion | Red, White, Yellow, and Black: 1972–73

In December 1972 and April 1973, Shigeko Kubota, Mary Lucier, Cecilia Sandoval and Charlotte Warren conceived of “multimedia concerts” at The Kitchen under the coalition Red, White, Yellow and Black—a name that explicitly associated each member with their cultural identity. Exemplifying their individual activities and backgrounds rather than act as a collective, the four women presented multimedia work which has notably dematerialized after the concerts, and has since been reconstructed only through scholarly text. In recognition of the 50th anniversary of these performances, this exhibition will bring together rarely seen archival material from the evenings in addition to the restaging of Kubota’s first video sculpture, Riverrun- Video Water Poem (1972), and Lucier and Sandoval's The Occasion of Her First Dance and How She Looked (1973). The living members of the collective will gather for a public program on March 11 to reflect on the legacy of the performances and the divergent directions their lives took afterwards. Artists Mary Lucier, Cecilia Sandoval,  and Charlotte Warren in conversation with co-curators Lumi Tan and Lia Robinson.

Concert | Songs We Still Sing: 80 Years since the Holocaust in North Macedonia

The Elias Ladino Ensemble in an evening of Monastirli music commemorating the 80th anniversary of the Holocaust in North Macedonia On March 11, 1943, Bulgarian soldiers forcibly took Jews across North Macedonia, from Bitola, Stip, and Skopje, to the Monopol tobacco warehouse outside Skopje. Over the following days, more than 7,000 Jews existed under inhumane conditions in the warehouse before being taken to the death camp, Treblinka. Eighty years later to the day, descendants of one of these Jewish communities, the Monastirli of Bitola, will get together to talk, pray, and sing in order to remember those who were murdered. Take this time to mourn, but also to recognize that the Holocaust was not the end of our story.
