Amidst the racial turmoil of 1960 Louisiana, 110-year-old ex slave Jane Pittman agrees to an interview with a persistent journalist. She recounts the story of her life, in which she was orphaned early and forced to work on a plantation until a chance meeting with a white Union soldier named Brown. Jane's eventual emancipation marks the beginning of a long and arduous story about the horrors of slavery and the justice of the civil rights movement.
