Lecture | The Great Persian Poet in the Land of the Soviets: The Millennium of Ferdowsi in the Soviet Union in 1934

A lecture by Diego Benning Wang. Moderated by Taylor Zajicek. In September-October 1934, the millennium of the birth of the Persian-language epic poet Ferdowsi was celebrated not only in Tehran and the poet’s native Tus but also in Moscow, Leningrad, Kyiv, and across numerous culturally Persianate ethno-national territorial entities of the Soviet Union, most notably in Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Tajikistan. Albeit labeled a Tajik national poet in the later decades, Ferdowsi was still officially considered an Persian/Iranian poet at the time of the Millennium Jubilee (and until the early 1940s). Owing as much to the enthusiastic instigations of Soviet linguist and archaeologist Hovsep Orbeli, who was then director of the Hermitage, as to friendly relations between two rapidly modernizing neighboring states–the Soviet Union and Persia (renamed Iran several months after the Jubilee), the grandiose Jubilee involved the active participation of Soviet leaders, prominent Soviet scholars, and the wider Soviet public on an unprecedented scale. Taking place in the immediate aftermath of the First Writers’ Congress, the Ferdowsi Jubilee marked a watershed in the Soviet approach to the pre-Bolshevik literary and cultural heritage of the non-Slavic nations of the Soviet empire. The foreignness of Ferdowsi notwithstanding, the Jubilee set the ideological and organizational paradigm for future literary jubilees of the national literary figures/works of Soviet nations, particularly in the Soviet republics of the South Caucasus and Central Asia.

Lecture | Strolling the Village with Fitz-Greene Halleck

Though a statue of Fitz-Greene Halleck graces the Poet’s Walk in Central Park, the nearly forty years he lived in New York City, between 1808 and 1848, were spent mostly in Greenwich Village. Halleck got his start in newspapers, earning his reputation with versified, “talk of the town”-style poems that reported on some of the hottest cultural events of his day. A confirmed bachelor, Halleck also came into contact with some of the earliest forms of New York’s night life, theater, and sex work. This lecture will introduce audiences to this once-famous but now forgotten poet, and along the way it will trace some of the paths he walked during one of New York City’s fastest and most consequential periods of urban development. Speaker Jordan Alexander Stein is Professor of English and Comparative Literature at Fordham University.

Lecture | Switching Genders in Ancient Egyptian Myths: A Tale of Two Stories

A productive way of looking at ancient Egyptian society’s assumptions about the differences between men and women is to examine works of art and literature in which they play the same roles, and note the places where changes needed to be made. For example, one can compare the same chapter of the Book of the Dead when it belongs to a man and when it belongs to a woman. A similar comparison can be made when a man and a woman play the same roles in a literary narrative. In this lecture, Dr. Ann Macy Roth will argue for the underlying similarity of two well-known ancient Egyptian stories, “The Tale of Two Brothers” from the New Kingdom and “The Myth of Isis and Osiris” as recorded by Plutarch in Greek during the Graeco-Roman period but alluded to in earlier Egyptian texts. By examining what can stay the same in these stories and what must change when the gender of the character is changed, we can gain some insights into what the ancient Egyptians thought about the nature and roles of men and women.

Book Discussion | Righting Wrongs: Three Decades on the Front Lines Battling Abusive Governments (in-person and online)

The long-time head of Human Rights Watch discusses taking on the biggest villains and toughest autocrats around the world. Kenneth Roth spent nearly three decades directing Human Rights Watch and building it into a powerful global institution. His first book, Righting Wrongs, combines memoir and analysis to refute the skeptics who question whether it is possible to defend human rights effectively. Roth pulls back the curtain on the strategies and tactics that Human Rights Watch and its allies employed to force governments to behave better. At a time of global instability and rising right-wing extremism, Roth provides an insider’s view of how it is possible for a relatively small group of people—through persistence and creativity—to move even the most powerful and despotic governments.

Book Discussion | The Melancholy of Resistance by Laszlo Krasznahorkai

A powerful, surreal novel, in the tradition of Gogol, about the chaotic events surrounding the arrival of a circus in a small Hungarian town. The Melancholy of Resistance, László Krasznahorkai's magisterial, surreal novel, depicts a chain of mysterious events in a small Hungarian town. A circus, promising to display the stuffed body of the largest whale in the world, arrives in the dead of winter, prompting bizarre rumors. Word spreads that the circus folk have a sinister purpose in mind, and the frightened citizens cling to any manifestation of order they can find music, cosmology, fascism. The novel's characters are unforgettable: the evil Mrs. Eszter, plotting her takeover of the town; her weakling husband; and Valuska, our hapless hero with his head in the clouds, who is the tender center of the book, the only pure and noble soul to be found. Compact, powerful and intense, The Melancholy of Resistance, as its enormously gifted translator George Szirtes puts it, "is a slow lava flow of narrative, a vast black river of type."

Concert | Tribute to The Slits, Pioneering Punk Band

This year's American Songbook series celebrates the voices of women and nonbinary performers who have not only shaped the landscape of music, but have also driven important conversations on gender, identity, and empowerment. Few artists fit that bill more precisely than The Slits, a riotous, pioneering, female-led UK experimental band that parlayed a love for dub, punk, and surf rock into an influential and durable DIY success story. Originally formed in 1976 by the legendary Ari Up and Palmolive, the group's notorious debut LP Cut spawned a genuine radio hit with their raucous cover of "I Heard It Through the Grapevine." The many hits of The Slits will be presented by the American Songbook band--featuring Keyanna Hutchinson (guitar), Barbara Duncan (percussion), Flora Lucini (bass), and Elenna Canlas (keyboards and vocals)--joined by an array of musical luminaries, all paying their respects to one of the true pioneers of punk.

Book Discussion | Wake Island Wildcat: A Marine Fighter Pilot's Epic Battle at the Beginning of World War II (online)

When the Japanese attacked Wake Island in December 1941—the same day as the attack on Pearl Harbor—Marine pilot Henry T. Elrod took to the skies in his F4F Wildcat fighter to defend the American military base on the tiny Pacific atoll, battling swarms of enemy planes and ships with rare courage and skill for the next two weeks. Captain Elrod, who had attended Yale and spent his freshman year playing football at the University of Georgia, had arrived mere days before as part of a fighter squadron of twelve pilots. On December 10 and 11, Elrod had two of the most remarkable days of the war for any pilot in any theater: he took on a group of twenty-two Japanese planes—shooting down two—and then bombed and strafed the destroyer Kisaragi, sinking the vessel with all hands and becoming the first American pilot to sink a warship with small caliber bombs delivered by a fighter plane in World War II. Then, once American aircraft were too damaged to fly, the pilots joined the ground defense against Japanese invasion forces. Elrod assumed command of one sector of the beach and led the repulse of repeated enemy assaults until he was killed on the last day of the battle, just before the American surrender. Though unsuccessful, the against-the-odds battle for Wake Island buoyed American morale during a dark period of World War II. Elrod, who became known as “Hammerin’ Hank,” was a key figure in the defense. For his gallantry, he was posthumously promoted to major and awarded the Medal of Honor. A US Navy frigate and a street at Marine Base Quantico were named for him, and a piece of his plane is on display at the National Air and Space Museum. Drawing on research in military archives and materials from Elrod’s family, William L. Ramsey tells Hammerin’ Hank’s full story—which is not only the history of the battle for Wake Island but also the experiences that led him to become a Marine fighter pilot—with drama and verve.
