Book Discussion | The Moving Image: A User's Manual by Peter B. Kaufman

130 years since the birth of film, the moving image—from movies to TV to Tiktok—is today's most popular information medium. Join Peter B. Kaufman, Senior Program Officer at MIT Learning, for a conversation about the ascendance of video as explored in his new book The Moving Image: A User's Manual, with audio archivist Marcos Sueiro Bal. Video (television, film, the moving image generally) is today's most popular information medium. Two-thirds of the world's internet traffic is video. Americans get their news and information more often from screens and speakers than through any other means. The Moving Image is the first authoritative account of how we have arrived here, together with the first definitive manual to help writers, educators, and publishers use video more effectively. Drawing on decades as an educator, publisher, and producer, MIT's Peter Kaufman presents new tools, best practices, and community resources for integrating film and sound into media that matters. Kaufman describes video's vital role in politics, law, education, and entertainment today, only 130 years since the birth of film. He explains how best to produce video, distribute it, clear rights to it, cite it, and, ultimately, archive and preserve it. With detailed guidance on producing and deploying video and sound for publication, finding and using archival video and sound, securing rights and permissions, developing distribution strategies, and addressing questions about citation, preservation, and storage—across the broadest spectrum of platforms, publications, disciplines, and formats—The Moving Image equips readers for the medium's continued ascendance in education, publishing, and knowledge dissemination in the decades to come.

Classical Music | Choral Ensembles Perform Renaissance, Contemporary and Baroque Music

Two ensembles -- Downtown Voices and Amor Artis -- will perform Renaissance, Baroque and contemporary works, including the Renaissance choral piece Spem in Alium, a 40-part motet. Program Frank Martin (1890-1974) Mass for Double Choir Thomas Tallis (1505-1585) Spem in Alium Orazio Benevoli (1605-1672) Missa Tu Es Petrus About the program Mass for Double Choir was once viewed by Frank Martin as a private composition, which he kept in his drawer for fourty years. The composer considered this particular work to be between himself and God. It wasn't until a Hamburg choral conductor requested the piece for "study purposes" that Mass for Double Choir was finally performed for the public by the Bugenhagen choir. After, Martin relented to its publication and the piece went on to become one of his most popular works. Thomas Tallis's Spem in Alium was composed in 1570 for eight choirs of five voices each, a groundbreaking arragement both then and now. The piece was likely inspired by Italian composer Alessandro Striggio's 40-part motet and, translated from Latin, means "hope in any other." Orazio Benevoli's Missa Tu Es Petrus was scored for four choirs and written to be performed in the new basilica of St Peter. Benevoli pulled inspiration from Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina's six-voice motet Tu es Petrus, featuring a multi-choir style piece packed with cross-rhythms.

Concert | The Zero Hour: Austrian Literature and Music at the End of World War II

An evening of literature and music with Elysium that reflects on the past while asking the urgent question: What do we do with the freedom we have gained? 2025 marks the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, a turning point in world history. When the guns fell silent on May 8, 1945, Europe lay in ruins, cities were reduced to rubble, and the scars of war ran deep. The atrocities of the Nazi regime--including the murder of six million Jews, as well as the persecution of Sinti and Roma, homosexuals, and people with disabilities--had left a lasting wound on humanity. How did Austrian writers experience the end of the war? How did they confront the horrors of the past and the challenge of rebuilding a democratic society? This special program explores these questions through the words of Ilse Aichinger, Ingeborg Bachmann, Franz Theodor Csokor, Milo Dor, Michael Guttenbrunner, Ruth Kluger, and Hilde Spiel--authors who captured the trauma, reckoning, and hope of this historical moment. Their texts, reflecting the perspectives of Holocaust survivors, resistance fighters, and civilians, illuminate the struggles of an era that still resonates today. In his novel Dead Men on Leave, Austrian-Yugoslav author Milo Dor has a partisan proclaim: "We have set liberation day as our final goal. That was a big mistake. Hence the disappointment. Liberation is not the end of the story. It is only the beginning. What matters now is what we do with the freedom we have gained." Accompanying these literary reflections is a moving selection of songs by Paul Dessau, Hanns Eisler, Erich Wolfgang Korngold, Ernst Krenek, Frederick Schreiber, Vally Weigl, and Kurt Weill--composers whose music embodies both the sorrow and resilience of the time.

Book Discussion | Loca: Young People Living on the Edge

It’s 1999, and best friends Sal and Charo are striving to hold on to their dreams in a New York determined to grind them down. Sal is a book-loving science nerd trying to grow beyond his dead-end job in a new city, but he’s held back by tragic memories from his past in Santo Domingo. Free-spirited Charo is surprised to find herself a mother at twenty-five, partnered with a controlling man, working at the same supermarket for years, her world shrunk to the very domesticity she thought she’d escaped in her old country. When Sal finds love at a gay club one night, both his and Charo’s worlds unexpectedly open up to a vibrant social circle that pushes them to reckon with what they owe to their own selves, pasts, futures, and, always, each other. Loca follows one daring year in the lives of young people living at the edge of their own patience and desires. With expansive grace, it reveals both the grueling conditions that force people to migrate and the possibility of friendship as home when family, nations, and identity groups fall short. Author Reading | Nonfiction New Salon: McKenzie Wark

A reading by McKenzie Wark, hosted by Hari Kunzu, followed by a reception/signing. McKenzie Wark is an Australian-born writer, critical theorist, and Professor of Culture and Media at The New School. She is the author A Hacker Manifesto (2004)—a foundational text of digital media studies—Gamer Theory (2007), The Beach Beneath the Street (2011), Molecular Red (2015), Capital is Dead (2019), Reverse Cowgirl (2019), Philosophy for Spiders (2021), and Raving (2023), in which Wark takes readers into the undisclosed locations of New York’s thriving underground queer and trans rave scene. Reverse Cowgirl, Wark’s self-described “auto-ethnography of the opacity of self,” traces her failed attempts at living as a gay man during the 1970s and ’80s and her subsequent journey towards life as a trans woman in the 2010s, employing a blend of low theory, personal recollection, and sex writing as tools for rethinking the narrative boundaries of trans life and literature. Wark further expands upon Reverse Cowgirl’s autotheoretical approach in her most recent book, Philosophy for Spiders (2021), which recounts Wark’s short-lived romance with the novelist Kathy Acker.
