Film | Norma Rae (1979) with Sally Field

Norma Rae works at the textile mill, just like a lot of her family before her. The pay is low, the hours are long, and the working conditions are lousy. But after hearing a rousing speech by Reuben, a labor activist, Norma is inspired to unionize her workplace and rally her fellow workers. Her decision causes tension in her family, especially with her fiance, Sonny, and creates contempt from her employers. Director: Martin Ritt Cast: Sally Field, Ron Leibman, Beau Bridges, Pat Hingle, Barbara Baxley Sally Field is an American actress known for her extensive work on screen and stage. She has received many accolades throughout her career spanning over five decades, including two Academy Awards, two Golden Globe Awards, and three Primetime Emmy Awards, in addition to nominations for a Tony Award and two British Academy Film Awards.

Screening | Silent Clowns Film Showcase: The "Other" Chaplin

Although Sydney Chaplin's solo work has always been over shadowed by that of his younger half-brother, the "other" Chaplin was a talented comic and behind the scenes comedy creator. Oh! What a Nurse! (1926) is a rare example of the late 1920s features that Syd starred in for Warner Brothers, which showcased his own sizeable talents and mastery of English music hall comedy. A selected short subject opens the bill. The Silent Clowns Film Series is New York's longest-running regularly scheduled silent film showcase. The programming reaches the serious film buff by including rarely-screened titles and rare prints, yet it also introduces kids and new audiences to the classics of the silent screen. Screenings feature live piano accompaniment by MoMA's Ben Model, with an introduction and Q&A by film historians Model and Steve Massa. Registration required.

Opera | Handel's Alcina: Sorcery, Love and Betrayal

Handel's Alcina, presented by Mannes Opera. Witchcraft, transformation, love-sick fools, magic rings - all taking place on an island. Alcina (1773) is one of Handel's three operas based on Ludovico Ariosto's epic work, Orlando Furioso (1516). The opera is a wild, messy story of love and deception - a fairy tale with magic that accurately describes the pain and exaltation of falling in love. Director: Sam Helfrich Conductor: Geoffrey MacDonald.
