Lecture | Divas and Sonnets: Poetry for Female Singers in the Primo Ottocento

Lecture by Francesco Izzo (University of Southampton). Poetry celebrating opera singers is almost as old as opera itself. During the course of the nineteenth century, as the periodical press developed rapidly, celebratory poetry dedicated to established or rising prima donnas featured prominently in many Italian music journals, contributing substantially to the construction and perception of the diva during the golden age of Italian opera. This lecture presents and discusses numerous examples of diva poetry of the primo Ottocento, exploring the social, cultural, and musical ramifications of this fascinating and hitherto neglected literary genre. Francesco Izzo is Lecturer in Music at the University of Southampton, and has lectured and published extensively on nineteenth-century Italian opera and other subjects. Presently a Visiting Associate Professor at the University of Chicago, he is preparing a critical edition of Verdi's Un giorno di regno for the University of Chicago Press and writing a book on the culture of opera buffa after Rossini. He is the Associate Director of the American Institute for Verdi Studies at NYU, where he earned his Ph.D. in musicology and held a postdoctoral fellowship from 2003 to 2005.

Theater | Oscar Wilde's “Lady Windermere's Fan”

Lady Windermere’s Fan was Oscar Wilde’s first produced play, and it was an instant success on the London stage. Chronicling a series of misunderstandings and deceptions in the high society world of Victorian London, critics and audiences alike were charmed by Wilde’s trademark wit and intelligence. In the play, Lady Windermere considers leaving her husband of two years when she believes he’s been unfaithful with a woman—who turns out to be her own mother. Remarkably, it will be the mother who sets her straight without ever revealing her identity. In his letters, Wilde claimed that he did not want the play to be viewed as ‘‘a mere question of pantomime and clowning’’; he was interested in the piece as a psychological study. Although the play has been deemed outdated by recent critics, Lady Windermere’s Fan continues to entertain audiences all over the world. Performed by members of the Graduate Acting Class of 2010.

Talk | The White House Organic Farm Project

"Dispatches from the White House Organic Farm Project" with Daniel Bowman Simon. Simon began The White House Organic Farm Project (TheWhoFarm), a quixotic quest to petition the winner of the 2008 presidential election to grow food on the White House lawn. After WaitingForApples, a solar-powered publicity stunt held outside of Apple’s flagship store on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan, Simon and his friend Casey traveled across twenty-five states and ultimately to nation’s capital on an upside-down school bus with a rooftop vegetable garden. Everywhere they went they talked to folks of all walks to raise awareness about the White House’s edible landscape potential, and gathered heaps of signatures in support of the project. In this presentation, Simon will share a colorful account of his experiences on the road in 2008, discuss what motivated him to pursue the project in the first place, and talk about his most recent (and more local) agrarian ambitions: a small vegetable garden at New York’s City Hall.

Author Reading | Andrei Codrescu reads from his book, “The Posthuman Dada Guide”

An impractical handbook for practical living in our posthuman world--all by way of examining the imagined 1916 chess game between Tristan Tzara, the daddy of Dada, and V. I. Lenin, the daddy of communism. This epic game at Zurich's Café de la Terrasse--a battle between radical visions of art and ideological revolution--lasted for a century and may still be going on, although communism appears dead and Dada stronger than ever. As the poet faces the future mass murderer over the chessboard, neither realizes that they are playing for the world. Taking the match as metaphor for two poles of twentieth- and twenty-first-century thought, politics, and life, Andrei Codrescu has created his own brilliantly Dadaesque guide to Dada--and to what it can teach us about surviving our ultraconnected present and future. Codrescu is an award-winning writer and National Public Radio commentator. His latest books are Jealous Witness: New Poems and New Orleans, Mon Amour: Twenty Years of Writing from the City. The author of many essay collections, including The Disappearance of the Outside, he is the MacCurdy Distinguished Professor of English at Louisiana State University.
