Performance | Momus and Aki Sasamoto's “Love is the End of Art”

A performance by Momus in collaboration with performance artist Aki Sasamoto. Momus will take the dual roles of art critic and unrequited lover, framing and critiquing Sasamoto's performance (which involves lectures, potatoes, stretched utensils, and bungee elastic) with a narrative that slips awkwardly between the abstract and the specific, the public and the private. Dressed as a kuroko, a kabuki stagehand, Momus will hover over Sasamoto's performance like a ghost, occasionally breaking off to sing along with a track from Martin Rev's strange 1996 album "See me Ridin." Sasamoto will completely ignore Momus, as a kabuki actor ignores the stagehands bustling around. She originally created her piece within the insular environment of her psyche, where the only type of love she was concerned with was platonic love for her mother. She did not consider how others might frame her. Love is the End of Art exists between Sasamoto's personal intention and Momus's interpretation.

Talk | International Pioneers of Electric Service

Presentations over the past three years by engineering historian Joseph Cunningham on 125 years of electric power service in New York City have focused primarily on inventors and researchers in the United States as most developments originated in the Northeast. There was, however, substantial parallel development pursued in Europe, primarily in England, Germany, and Switzerland. In this presentation, he will review significant developers in Europe which influenced, made major contributions, and on occasion, even partnered with U.S. promoters. Among the primary figures discussed will be Joseph Swan, Sebastian Ferrante, Ernst Werner von Siemens, Guido Panteleone and the Swiss team of Brown and Boveri. That interchange of knowledge and research aided development but also encouraged competition which produced further advance to the field.

Talk | Preventing Clutter

"But I Might Need It Someday! - Recognizing the Beliefs and Behaviors that Cause Clutter and Prevent You from Living Your Best Life" with A. J. Miller, professional organizer. Too many homes today reflect the endless opportunities we have to acquire "stuff" and - after decades of unchecked consumption - we now find ourselves in the middle of a clutter epidemic. No matter how old or what race you are, how much money you have, what kind of an education you received or where you stand on the social ladder, you can be affected by clutter and the disorganization and stress it can cause. If you're overwhelmed by your possessions, if it feels like they own you instead of the other way around, it's time to face - and fix - your relationship with them and create the life you really want.
