Performance | Momus and Aki Sasamoto's “Love is the End of Art”

A performance by Momus in collaboration with performance artist Aki Sasamoto. Momus will take the dual roles of art critic and unrequited lover, framing and critiquing Sasamoto's performance (which involves lectures, potatoes, stretched utensils, and bungee elastic) with a narrative that slips awkwardly between the abstract and the specific, the public and the private. Dressed as a kuroko, a kabuki stagehand, Momus will hover over Sasamoto's performance like a ghost, occasionally breaking off to sing along with a track from Martin Rev's strange 1996 album "See me Ridin." Sasamoto will completely ignore Momus, as a kabuki actor ignores the stagehands bustling around. She originally created her piece within the insular environment of her psyche, where the only type of love she was concerned with was platonic love for her mother. She did not consider how others might frame her. Love is the End of Art exists between Sasamoto's personal intention and Momus's interpretation.

Opening Reception | Four exhibitions, many artists

An impressive selection of talented artists has been brought together for Labyrinth of Abstraction, a showcase of contemporary abstract painting. Out From Down Under & Beyond celebrates contemporary artists from Australia and New Zealand. Enriched with both Western and indigenous artistic traditions, some of the finest contemporary visual art, where the importance and sacredness of the land, the power of ancestral art as well as modern artistic joy and technique become a uniting theme. The wide variety of artistic invention which greets audiences attending Portals of Perception underscores the idea that as long as people dream and imagine, art will never cease to exist, inspire, and bring about contemplation in others. The artists of Manifestation of Milieu cull resonant imagery from their travels, dreams, and life experiences that speak to us on a personal level.

Author Reading | Peter Selgin reads from his book Life Goes to the Movies

When Vietnam-veteran-turned-film-maker Dwaine Fitzgibbon takes Nigel DePoli under his wing to teach him about movies and life, Nigel thinks he’s found the perfect antidote to his small-town, immigrant child’s upbringing. But Dwaine is arguably insane, and the greatest movie they’ll ever collaborate on is the one he produces in Nigel’s gullible, hero-addled mind. Selgin’s book of stories, Drowning Lessons, won the Flannery O’Connor Award for 2007 and he is also the author of By Cunning & Craft: Sound Advice and Practical Wisdom for Fiction Writers.
