Concert | ARTEK Ensemble performs Monteverdi's madrigals

Program: Monteverdi: Madrigals from Book V The fifth book of madrigals, published in 1605 by Claudio Monteverdi (1567-1643), marks a significant milestone in the evolution of Baroque music; Monteverdi's use of basso continuo and unprepared dissonance in these five-part madrigals was considered daringly radical and modern in the composer's own time. The acclaimed American early music ensemble ARTEK, founded in 1986 by Gwendolyn Toth, specializes in the music of Monteverdi and the early Baroque. Singers for the madrigals will be Laura Heimes, soprano, Barbara Hollinshead, mezzo-soprano, Drew Minter, counter-tenor, Philip Anderson, tenor, Michael Brown, tenor, and Peter Becker, baritone.

Lecture | How to Do Things with the Medium in Art Criticism

Speaker: Dan Wack (Knox College). Many contemporary philosophers, most prominently Noel Carroll, have argued that the very idea of an artistic medium should be banished from art criticism, on the grounds that it is an evaluatively sterile idea. In Carroll’s view, the idea of an artistic medium is at best a term of art theory but useless in critical description and evaluation. Wack argue that Carroll shares with his putative opponents an understanding of the medium of film as nothing more than the moving image: that is, it is nothing more than the material substrate out of which such works of art are made. Although Carroll is correct in thinking that that such an account of an artistic medium is critically useless, he is wrong to think that this is what talk of artistic medium can amount to in art criticism.

Screening | Documentary: Crystal Emery's The Deadliest Disease in America (2008): Race and Health Care

Health care reform has been in the headlines for years. And while coverage for all Americans has usually been the primary concern of reformists, legislators and others, none of the discussions includes the prevailing issue of racial and ethnic disparity in the system, much to the dismay of affected practitioners and consumers. This film follows the real-life stories of four individuals – each of whom has experienced racism in their medical care – and three health care organizations where change is becoming real. A workshop with Emery follows the screening.
