Performance | Telephony War Engagement: A Networked Performance by Media Minor

Why do we ‘depend’ upon broadcast media for ‘rumors of war’? Telephony can and does put us in direct contact with front lines. Can we contact those engaged in fighting and have them participate in a project that avoids aestheticising conflict in an attempt to make the opaque transparent? Using you tube, face book, chat-roulette, and other means of telematic content, they will elicit interest and discussion on the ancient public discourses on the culture of war and war making.

Staged Reading | Roundtable Readings: Edmond Rostand's Cyrano de Bergerac

Reading directed by Robert Ross Parker. Cyrano is a brash, strong-willed man of many talents. In addition to being a remarkable duelist, he is a gifted, joyful poet and is also shown to be a musician. However, he has an extremely large nose, which is a target for his own self-doubt. This doubt prevents him from expressing his love for the beautiful Roxane, as he believes that his ugliness forbids him to "dream of being loved by even an ugly woman."

Gallery Talk | Artist John Miller discusses his participation in the exhibition Nachleben

Taking up art historian Aby Warburg's signature idea of Nachleben, meaning both "afterlife" and "survival," a display of contemporary art works and a series of related programs bring together artistic practices that share an affinity with Warburg's proposals regarding associative thinking, image sequencing, and a dialectics of seeing that extends across eras, cultures, and methodologies.

Opening Reception | Mixed Media Works: Johannes VanDerBeek's Another Time Man

This exhibition is vaguely divided into three sections that form a sequence. These sections use light and materials in varying ways to reflect upon larger themes such as transformation, the passage of time, dreams, being broke but resilient, and searching for stories within holey pockets of thought. As viewers move through this body of work, they consider how an exhibition could be interpreted in a dream and how different elements become stand-ins for a larger meaning in both comical and puzzling ways. VanDerBeek's work was exhibited in National Projects at PS1/MoMA in Long Island City and Amazement Park: Stan, Sara and Johannes VanDerBeek at the Tang Museum at Skidmore College. His work is currently featured in Trapdoor, an exhibition organized by the Public Art Fund at MetroTech Center in Brooklyn, NY.

Opening Reception | Solo Exhibition by Patricia Esquivias

This show will feature the premiere of two video installations, "Folklore III" and "Natures at the Hand." Esquivias is a storyteller: she constructs narratives that simultaneously seem to coalesce into epiphany and unravel into slapstick. Both works in the show are promiscuous lectures that wander through images and texts and diverse media, where banal details are transformed into deep reflections on modernity, colonialism, and the natural world.
