Gallery Talk | Artist Patricia Esquivias discusses her work

A screening and conversation with Patricia Esquivias and curators Fionn Meade and Manuela Moscoso, presented in conjunction with New York Gallery Week. Her show will feature the premiere of two video installations, "Folklore III" and "Natures at the Hand." Esquivias is a storyteller: she constructs narratives that simultaneously seem to coalesce into epiphany and unravel into slapstick. Both works in the show are promiscuous lectures that wander through images and texts and diverse media, where banal details are transformed into deep reflections on modernity, colonialism, and the natural world.

Opening Reception | Sculpture: Andy Coolquitt's We Care About You

Coolquitt’s abstract, linear sculptures made of joined pipes, broom handles, discarded lighters, beer bottles, light bulbs, straws, and crayons, are minimalist, ordered rearrangements of the raw world from which their components are sourced. Human-scaled and oddly anthropomorphic, Coolquitt’s work relates to the body in scale and form. Many times the works are functional, but Coolquitt is more interested in their dysfunction and their tenuous relationship with practicality. Coolquitt was born in Texas in 1964. He has exhibited extensively in the United States and Europe, most recently with a solo show at Jack Hanley Gallery in San Francisco. In 2011, Coolquitt will have a solo exhibition at the Blaffer Gallery at the University of Houston in Texas accompanied by a catalogue.
