Lecture | Maurice Merleau-Ponty's Motor-Intentional Theory of Action

A lecture by Gabrielle Jackson. In Maurice Merleau-Ponty’s Phenomenology of Perception, we are introduced to a neuropathological patient named Schneider. Schneider’s intentions and bodily behaviors had become decoupled, leaving him to assimilate all of his bodily behaviors to the causal structure normally reserved for highly deliberative actions (reflecting about the future, choosing among difficult options, etc.) and merely reflexive reactions (reacting automatically, behaving compulsively, etc.). Merleau-Ponty concluded that the model where intentions and bodily behaviors are decoupled could not be the formula that all, or even most, actions follow. Instead, he asserted that in the vast majority of actions intentions and bodily behaviors enjoy a non-causal unity. This was Merleau-Ponty’s motor-intentional theory of action.

Author Reading | Andrew Moore & Philip Levine discuss their book Detroit Disassembled

No longer the Motor City of boom-time industry, the city of Detroit has fallen into an incredible state of dilapidation since the decline of the American auto industry after the Second World War. Today, whole sections of the city resemble a war zone, its once-spectacular architectural grandeur reduced to vacant ruins. Photographer Andrew Moore records a territory in which the ordinary flow of time-or the forward march of the assembly line-appears to have been thrown spectacularly into reverse. Photographer Andrew Moore will be joined by Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Philip Levine who wrote an essay for the book.

All the characters in Citkowitz’s first collection of short fiction are connected by the quest for identity. Some are poised at a crossroads, while others teeter on the edge of a moral precipice. The stories are startlingly original, haunting, and often funny. From a hamster cage in Los Angeles to the bowels of the great houses of London and Long Island, Citkowitz depicts her characters’ frailties and humanity with a mordant humor and tenderness that never diminish their complexity.
