Film | 2 Documentaries: La Lupe: Queen of Latin Soul / Refugee

La Lupe: Queen of Latin Soul (pictured, 2007) Directed by Ela Troyano. A rebel and innovator, pop singer Lupe Yoli, otherwise known as La Lupe, was renowned for her emotional performance style. The legendary Cuban-born star was also a single mother of two, a survivor of domestic abuse, and a Santera who later became an evangelist Christian speaker. Troyano tells La Lupe’s story through character-driven interviews in first-person anecdotes, in an oral history much like those found in a folk ballad or a bolero. 60 min. Refugee (2003) Directed by Spencer Nakasako. A documentary that follows the reunion of three young Cambodian American men—refugees raised on the mean streets of San Francisco’s Tenderloin district—with their estranged families back in Cambodia. 63 min.

Opening Reception | Paintings: Joseph Montgomery's Lie lay lain Lay laid laid

Montgomery’s paintings incorporate bits of wood, concrete, clay and wire into small, considered formal compositions. Each painting is worked on for an extended period of time, creating a material lexicon that records the act of painting and accumulates evidence of a painting’s evolution. His surfaces are heavily worked, and their lumpy and textured pigments both accentuate and sabotage pictorial cohesion, sometimes resulting in sculptural objects that complicate the flatness of painting. Montgomery was born in 1979 in Northampton, MA, and lives and works in New York. His paintings have been included in recent group exhibitions including Cave Painting, curated by Bob Nickas, and To the left of the rising sun at Small A Projects.

Film | Andy Bichlbaum, Mike Bonanno & Kurt Engefehr's The Yes Men Fix the World (2009): The Joke's on Who?

The film consists of a several pranks on major corporations and governmental agencies that are performed by Andy Bichlbaum and Mike Bonanno (in real life, Jacques Servin & Igor Vamos) who fancy themselves serious anti-globalization activists. The two pose as executives from Exxon, Dow Chemical, Halliburton and the H.U.D. They give faux corporate interviews pretending to be Dow executives in which they supposedly announce setting up a $12 billion fund for the victims of the 1984 Bhopal disaster that killed 1,773 people. The BBC fell for this prank and aired the faux interview. This caused Dow's stock plummet. Our mindless heroes celebrate their power, but fail to realize that most of Dow's stock is held by pension funds; in other words, regular working class retirees. The dynamic duo conveniently found a few such victims who claimed to enjoy the hoax and its impact on Dow's stock. 87 min. Introduced by Bichlbaum.
