Opening Reception | Digital Domination - Cyber Nation

For the fourth consecutive year, the Gallery partners with high school students from Satellite Academy to present a group exhibition of contemporary artists. The student curators organize all aspects of the project including developing interpretations of artists' works, writing publicity materials, and developing the exhibition theme. For one semester, students enrolled in the Curatorial Studies Class learn how to curate an art exhibition about a specific topic that is relevant to their lives and the analysis of their social surroundings. The 2010 exhibition Digital Domination - Cyber Nation will attempt to link observations about the impact of cybernetics and digital media on our everyday relationships. The cybernetic invasion and computers have aggressively rendered daily life and relationships impotent. Digital Domination - Cyber Nation will explore how constant access to the internet in the western world has synthesized emotions. The selected work for this exhibition will critique the cybernetic myth about the emancipated access of useful information, and the fairy tale of global networking and sharing. It will attempt to demystify the democratic political claim of the cybernetic thesis and to take a closer look at how we define, perceive, and describe emotions now in a post-TV world. Satellite Academy Forsyth Campus is an alternative public high school created to help young people who have not been successful in traditional high schools. Satellite Academy Forsyth is a "last chance" school for disenfranchised students from all five boroughs. Many of these teens face a very difficult path to achieve success in their education. ABACA (Arts Benefit All Coalition Alternative) is a non-profit organization established in 1992 to advance and promote the use and presence of contemporary art in the educational development at Satellite Academy Forsyth. For more than 15 years ABACA has provided underserved New York City youth with progressive and groundbreaking art education through innovative teaching strategies, using the arts to enrich students their high school experience.
