More than 800 guests will attend New York City’s largest and most solemn Memorial Day observance at the historic Soldiers’ & Sailors’ Monument. This year’s ceremony honors the 150th anniversary of the Civil War with a musical tribute, procession of historic color guards, and military and historical addresses.
The U. S. Marine Corps Band will perform a medley of patriotic music beginning at 10:00 am.
The Grand Procession, led by the New York Scottish Pipes and Drums, sets off at 10:30.
A Marine Corps Color Guard will be joined by honorary color guards of the Sons of Union Veterans, and the Veteran Corps of Artillery in their historic uniforms, along with Sailors and Marines from the fleet, Coast Guardsmen, and cadets.
Noted Civil War historian Harold Holzer will give the annual memorial address.
20 wreaths will be laid at the landmark Memorial by Veteran’s, Civic, and Heritage organizations including the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, Daughters of the American Revolution, Daughters of the Confederacy, The Old Guard of the City of New York, the Navy League, American Legion, Jewish War Veterans, Montford Point Marines, and others.
