Lecture | Sylvia Townsend Warner, Novelist: A Biographical Introduction

The novelist, short-story writer and poet Sylvia Townsend Warner was a bestseller in the 1920s, a controversialist in the 1930s, a well-loved contributor to The New Yorker in the post-war years and a feminist 'rediscovery' in the 1970s. But despite a growing audience since her death in 1978, Warner remains (in Sarah Waters' words) 'one of the most shamefully under-read great British authors of the past 100 years'. What is it about Warner and her works that seems to have denied her an easy path to fame? And how much did her relative obscurity hamper or help her development as an artist? Claire Harman, Warner's biographer and the editor of her poems and diaries, reveals the story of this remarkable woman's life and how it affected the reception of her books both at the time of writing and now.

Tour | Greenwich Village Neighborhood Tour

Greenwich Village is among Manhattan's most desirable and expensive residential neighborhoods. It's history, however, betrays it's monied status. The Village, with it's quiet, shaded streets, lined with lovely brick and brownstone townhouses, was once the incubating ground of artistic, social and political movements that have helped shape US history. From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all.

Jazz | The Advanced Rhythm Ensemble

The Advanced Rhythm Ensemble focuses on student performance of concepts in a practical playing context. We work on playing rhythmic superimpositions, metric modulations, odd meters, changing meters, and cross-rhythms, using original music by the instructor and ensemble members, as well as blues, standards, and originals by other jazz composers where appropriate. Improvisation in solos, accompaniment, and ensemble work are all used to further mastery. The instructor is flexible about the instrumental makeup of the ensemble, and we find ways to use multiple players on any instruments in our ensemble’s arrangements.
