Tour | Greenwich Village Neighborhood Tour

Greenwich Village is among Manhattan's most desirable and expensive residential neighborhoods. It's history, however, betrays it's monied status. The Village, with it's quiet, shaded streets, lined with lovely brick and brownstone townhouses, was once the incubating ground of artistic, social and political movements that have helped shape US history. From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all.

Hagedorn's life and experiences were impacted by history and geography. Born in what had been the Weimar Republic, Hagedorn lived through Nazism, Communist rule in East Germany, relocation to the West German Republic-and then to the United States. Hagedorn's imagery was influenced by his childhood memories of the mechanical shapes and parts of his father's sawmill, what he called "a kaleidoscope of geometric planes". Durer, Pierro della Francesa, Leger, Miro, the Cubist and the Surrealists were artists he pointed to as impacting his vision.

Opening Reception | Sculpture: Gil Yefman's To Me You Are Beautiful (Bay Mir Bistu Sheyn)

Most known for his ambiguous knitted sculptures and animated films, Yefman aims to give a voice to the unheard and bring their stories to the center of attention. By creating characters with elusive gender and sexual identities, and fantastic realms in which they can exist, Yefman challenges society's traditional definitions of gender and how we portray the people who fall outside of them. In his short but prodigious career, Yefman has created a new language for himself out of the human form and wielded it to examine the connections between violence, sexuality, and "otherness."

Concert | Persian and Balkan Breakout

This continent-hopping double bill brings together two genre-busting bands that update rich folk traditions with their own contemporary sensibilities. Persian-American roots rock outfit Vatan puts a country twist on Middle Eastern folk music, pickin’ and grinnin’ on a Persian stringed tar. Then, the Eva Salina Band performs the wailing, brass-heavy ballads of Eastern Europe, featuring soaring, soul-shaking vocals by Balkan music guru Eva Primack.
