Greenwich Village is among Manhattan's most desirable and expensive residential neighborhoods. It's history, however, betrays it's monied status. The Village, with it's quiet, shaded streets, lined with lovely brick and brownstone townhouses, was once the incubating ground of artistic, social and political movements that have helped shape US history. From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all.

Opening Reception | Envisioning Ecstasy: Works by Cira Crowell and Christopher Michel

Envisioning Ecstasy features documentary and conceptual imagery expressing the kaleidoscopic experience of the Kalachakra Initiation and the complexity of life in remote Ladakh, India. The root of the word ecstasy, ek- "out," and stasis “stand,” conveys the simultaneous outer and inner visions of the two photographers, mirroring the transcendent nature of the Kalachakra teachings. The treasured Kalachakra, "Wheel of Time,” teachings are a once secretive ritual that brought wisdom to the mythical Shambhala and continue to be of great benefit to Tibetans and the world today. His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama bestowed the 33rd Kalachakra Initiation in Ladakh, India in July 2014.

Originally intended to bring people of all walks of life together -- a people's park -- Central Park lives up to it's original designs. Screening | From the 1966 Venice Flood to the Palazzo Farnese: 50 Years of Preserving Italy's Glorious Monuments

An audio/visual presentation by Bonnie Burnham, President, World Monuments Fund. World Monuments Fund had only recently been founded when Venice, Florence and other northern and central Italian cities were devastated by the terrible floods of 1966. WMF quickly galvanized international technical support and funding to respond to this catastrophe. Since that time, WMF has championed some 40 different restoration projects in that city alone and expanded to work throughout Italy. A highlight of WMF's current work in Italy is the restoration of the famed ceiling frescos by Annibale Carracci in the Palazzo Farnese in Rome, one of the highlights of Roman Baroque art. Bonnie Burnham will review WMF's fascinating projects in Italy and explore some of the challenges faced today in the preservation of that country's wealth of landmark buildings. In ENGLISH.

Discussion | The Sketchbook Project World Tour

The Sketchbook Project is destined to go down as one of the era’s most astonishing global art projects, having amassed more than 30,000 sketchbooks submitted by people from more than 130 countries. The Project continues to tour with its “mobile library” of sketchbooks, just a small selection of the vast collection on display at the Brooklyn Art Library. What does it take to create, maintain, and grow a cooperative art project like this? Sketchbook Project co-founder Steven Peterman moderates a panel with experts and collaborative artists—Sara Elands Peterman, Francesco Spampinato, Jason Wong, and Guno Park—to discuss collaborative and crowd sourced art and design.

Discussion | Destination Downtown: LES Oral History

From the late 60's through the early 2000's, the Lower East Side of NY became a mecca for people determined to live life by their rules. These disrupters migrated from all across America, escaping their ordinary suburban lives to live in this depopulated and dangerous neighborhood that offered unlimited opportunity to defy the norms while encouraging freedom of personal expression and lifestyle. The Destination Downtown project is a growing oral history that documents and connects the experiences of these people and their place in the pantheon of this historic and ever changing neighborhood. We celebrate their legacy, the neighborhood they revitalized, and the inspiration they are for generations around the world. With artist, activist, and provocateur Clayton Patterson, writer and performer Puma Perl, and artist and founder of Antagonist Art Movement Ethan Minsker.
