From the late 60's through the early 2000's, the Lower East Side of NY became a mecca for people determined to live life by their rules. These disrupters migrated from all across America, escaping their ordinary suburban lives to live in this depopulated and dangerous neighborhood that offered unlimited opportunity to defy the norms while encouraging freedom of personal expression and lifestyle.
The Destination Downtown project is a growing oral history that documents and connects the experiences of these people and their place in the pantheon of this historic and ever changing neighborhood. We celebrate their legacy, the neighborhood they revitalized, and the inspiration they are for generations around the world.
