From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all.

Film | Documentary: Kenneth Eng's My Life in China (2014)

"In America, everyone has a family story of immigration. Every family, at some point, has had somebody leave their native country behind to search for a better life. How did they hold onto their identity? How did they adapt to their new life? Every family has a special story. In my case, it's my Chinese-American story. My father would always tell us his story about walking for 7 days and 6 nights, before swimming for 4 hours to Macau to escape communism in 1966. His story would fall on my deaf ears until I returned to China with him." -- Kenneth Eng

Jazz | Lucy Yeghiazaryan, Jazz Music

Lucine has been an active member of the New York jazz community since immigrating to The U.S. in 2001 from Armenia. The uncommon fusion of a more Eastern oriented style of singing, and traditional jazz creates an undeniably distinct sound that immediately captivates the listener. The intricacies and heart of both musics are equally native to Lucy and are expressed most honestly and soulfully in performance. Her repertoire is versatile and includes unknown and scarcely recorded jazz, blues, sharakan and Latin compositions. Lucy plays violin in the septet SoundSketch lead by sister Tatev and YY SIsters, a prevalent acapella group dedicated to the preservation of ancient music. Lucy performs regularly at various venues and festivals throughout The States. She was the house singer of the National Armenian Jazz Orchestra for the 2013-2014 season and was a finalist in the prestigious International Monk Jazz Competition in 2015.
