Tour | Tour of Gracie Mansion, Home of New York's Mayors

In 1799, a prosperous New York merchant named Archibald Gracie built a country house overlooking a bend in the East River, five miles north of the then-New York City limits. Little did he know that, more than 200 years later, his home would be serving as the official residence of the First Family of New York City - a place where history is made, not merely recorded. As a historic house museum run by the Parks Department, sitting on 11 acres of grounds now known as Carl Schurz Park, Gracie Mansion has served as the home of 10 mayors, beginning first with Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia in 1942. Today, Gracie Mansion is occupied by the de Blasio family, which has opened its doors in the spirit of the administration's motto: one city, rising together. In keeping with that theme, Mayor de Blasio and First Lady Chirlane McCray have introduced a new art installation, titled “Windows on the City: Looking Out at Gracie’s New York.” Tours take place every Tuesday at 10am, 11am, 2pm, and 3pm until Dec. 12, 2017.

Lecture | How Immigrants—and Their Kids—Have Remade New York City

It has been fifty years since the Hart Celler Immigration reforms went into full effect, marking the resumption of massive international migration to New York City after a forty-year lull. Today, immigrants make up 37% of the NYC’s population and 46% of the labor force. Together, immigrants and their children make up the majority of NYC’s children and young adult population. How has this shaped NYC—its economy, politics, and culture? How have our institutions responded? And what does a political climate more hostile to immigration mean for the future of NYC? Join an engrossing conversation with Philip Kasinitz, Presidential Professor of Sociology of City University of New York, Graduate Center.

Author Reading | Charles Upchurch discusses his book Sympathetic Ink: The 1820s Attempt to Reform the British Sodomy Laws

The first account of a forgotten attempt to reform the sodomy laws in 1820s Britain. At the center of these events was a small group of men who were members of Parliament, who strongly identified with their feelings of same-sex desire, who explicitly wrote that such feelings were inborn and natural in them, and who based their political activism (ie: their lobbying of fellow parliamentarians to end the death penalty for sodomy) on this self-understanding. This book will demonstrate how these men’s identity was a product of their particular time, place, and circumstances, and will not attempt to displace the arguments for the late nineteenth century as the point of origin for what we think of as a modern gay identity.

Lecture | Midnight in America: The Demagogues of American History

The election results on November 8th stunned a large portion of the American public. The angry, nationalistic rhetoric of Trumpism won out despite doubts from across the political spectrum that the erratic candidate at the center of the movement could win the presidency or govern effectively. In the sweep of American history, however, the Trump phenomenon is neither novel nor uncommon. This talk looks closely at the political genealogy of the 45th president of the United States.
